Ben Keighran, the designer who played a key role in the development of the fourth-generation Apple TV is reportedly leaving the Cupertino California company. For those of you who didn't know, Keighran ended up joining Apple after the Cupertino California company acquired the startup he co-founded, Chomp, which was a search engine for mobile apps. He mentioned that he is leaving Apple soon and plans to start something new eventually. More specifically he had the following to say regarding the matter:
I want to create not just a killer product, but my own iconic company.
Since the acquisition of Chomp back in 2012, Keighran has spent the last three years overseeing both the look and feel of the software on the new Apple TV, which is a $149 set-top box tha tlets users watch video from the Web on their TV. He noted that the software found on the fourth-gen Apple TV incorporates part of what Chomp offered Apple during the acquisition. Keighran's departure from Apple will put him in the ranks with his previous startup co-founder Cathy Edwards, who left Apple two years ago.
There hasn't been news of whether he worked on any other projects during his stay at Apple. It is possible that he had something to do with Apple's TV-related services and potential hardware as well. These rumors have been gaining increasing speculation over the past few years and seemingly mixed signals from Apple as well. The Cupertino California company at one point was planning on introducing a subscription video service that would offer live TV from some broadcast and cable TV programmers, an effort which has been reportedly shelfed, though no one is certain.
Keighran refused to make any comments on Apple's projects aside from acknowledging that the company had looked at several different ways of delivering an "awesome TV experience."
We'll also have to wait and see what Keighran does next.
