WordPress has a new Mac desktop app and a brand new open-source interface design. Everything you can do on WordPress.com, you can now do using the Mac app.
WordPress powers 25% of websites on the internet. The new website design and app have a much cleaner, modern user experience. The Mac app updates pages and responds to comments right from inside the app. WordPress already has apps for iOS and Android, so the addition of a desktop app make WordPress accessible on nearly every device.
Many of the advantages to the Mac app don't have much to do with the app itself. OS X features such as full-screen app mode, push notifications, and shortcut key commands make it easier to complete tasks. The upgraded interface also includes a "Discover" feature. Follow "Discover" to view posts recommended by the WordPress editorial team.
The new WordPress interface makes it easier to manage all WordPress and Jetpack-enabled sites in one place. Developers built the site, codenamed Project Calypso, with JavaScript and REST API, separating the website from the WordPress core using Single Page Application. The redesigned website makes real-time changes. No page refresh necessary.
Lead software developer and WordPress owner Matt Mullenweg said his decision to put the codebase on GitHub was easy because open-source is "the most powerful idea of our generation." In the official announcement, Mullenweg also said the spirit of sharing is the reason WordPress has achieved such success."I'm proud to take our intellectual property crown jewels and open Calypso up to the world for the community to hack on, play with, poke, prod, and extend and make their own."
WordPress is working on an app for Windows and Linux, but hasn't set a release date yet.
