When Architects Design Software

Alex, Robert, and Moe: what is Dixon & Moe?

Dixon & Moe is a digital strategy, design, and development consultancy based in San Francisco. It is the only digital agency that we know of whose founding team consists of three trained architects.

We do a lot of work for clients in the architecture, engineering, and real estate industries. We've also worked with startups and institutions like MIT.

What instigated your move from architecture to the technology sector?

We all met through architecture school at MIT. Even with our frequent all nighters, we somehow found time to do side projects and hackathons together, which helped drive our growing collaboration over the years. The three of us knew we wanted to start a business, but we knew starting our own architecture practice would probably take an eon. Most architects work at an established firm for 10–15 years, then pilfer a few clients to bootstrap their own firm. We were not about to wait around for that to happen.

Another contributing factor was the conceptual freedom that we experienced in architecture school, something that is definitely lost when you move to the professional world. Software, we realized, still offered a bit more experimentation and personal creativity than architecture did in a real world context.

To us the speed of the tech sector is really exciting — the rate at which products are launched, the rate of innovation, and the sheer scale it touches. We all went into architecture to design systems and build physical environments to have a positive impact on society. The transition to tech was obvious when we realized we could accomplish those same goals through software. We still consider ourselves architects, just not in the traditional sense.

We want to get to a point where our products are being used by millions of people — something that could never happen if we stayed in architecture.

Dixon & Moe What skills from your training in architecture translated well to software design?

We really like having a background in architecture. It gives us a different perspective from other UX designers and developers in the field because we were trained to think at a 10,000 ft view. You have to learn software tools quickly, solve multifaceted problems, and communicate simple solutions to clients who often don't understand design.

In architecture we were taught to create systems for designing things, not just the things themselves, which has translated really well to designing software.

As architects, we build models to study spaces. A direct analog of this in the tech sector is building prototypes to study software applications. This made the transition all the more natural, as we were able to re-appropriate our iterative and experimental methodologies from physical models to digital products.

Architects tend to think they can design anything. What were you not prepared for when transitioning to software design?

A huge part of what enabled us to shift from designing buildings to designing software was the accessibility (and sheer scale) of information freely available online today. So we still think we can design anything (laughs).

The hardest part for us has been developing our business chops, like getting new work and growing our client base. Other than a single professional practice class we took in school — which we all coincidentally enjoyed far more than our classmates — we didn't have any formal training on how to start a business. Our company has largely been built on trial and error and the sage advice from family and friends that have helped us along the way.

Something we've embraced as part of transitioning to a technology company is testing and feedback. In architecture, you can only 'ship to production' once with a building. You don't iterate once you get feedback from users. This is something we initially had to adjust to, but ultimately we really wish existed in architecture. The three of us were trained to be perfectionists, so we've had to learn to be ok with putting our designs out into the world when they're not perfect.

What kinds of interesting clients have you worked with since you started?

Our clients tend to fall into two camps: startups and SaaS companies on the one hand, and AEC (architecture, engineering, construction) firms on the other.

We've had the opportunity to build powerful tools like ImageWall, a 3D configurator for 200ft perforated metal walls; digital platforms for the likes of MIT and Zahner; a prototype SDK for Flux, as well as some back of house software for large architecture firms. Navigating between architecture and technology companies has given us a unique perspective on both sides of the equation: architects can gain a lot from a fresh approach to the digital aspect of their business, and our design-centric workflow fits in well with contemporary startup culture.

MIT Design Lab What else are you working on?

Side projects still run in our blood. Our collaborative efforts were born out of a knack for hacking on nights and weekends, and we keep that mentality to this day. In addition to client work, we've got at least 4–5 ongoing internal projects.

One of our favorites is Color Codes which now generates around $4,000 per month in passive income for us. You can read the full write-up on IndieHackers, but long story short, we built a color picking website and ranked it #1 on Google for a whole bunch of keywords. The website currently gets over a million page views a month, and we've learned more about SEO than we ever knew existed.

Rellax JS

Another fun project was Rellax, a lightweight JavaScript parallax library. As our first foray into the open source world it's been amazing to see the organic growth in the development community, with well-known brands like Microsoft and Gucci using the library on some of their recent projects.

Probably our most well-known product we've built is Monograph Websites, a niche website builder (think Squarespace for architects). We're also rolling out a business dashboard product for architecture and engineering firms called Monograph Dashboard. Frankly, most architects are flying blind when it comes to the business side of their practice. So Monograph Dashboard seeks to make it easy for firms to manage staffing, financial metrics, budgets, and scheduling.

Starting a company is no easy feat, what learnings could you share with other designers that are thinking about going out on their own?

Be prepared to spend 50% of your time looking for new work. This includes marketing, business development, networking, and trolling LinkedIn for old acquaintances.

No matter how much you prepare, you'll never be "ready." Being afraid of the unknown is very natural. We live by the saying that "shooters shoot." In basketball, even if you miss your last 10 shots, the only thing you can do is keep shooting. That mentality has served us well.

7 skills every web designers should have

web design skills

web design skills

Nowadays the term web designer is not blurry. However, some skills and topics should be part of the repertoire.

The distinction between web designers, graphic designers, and web developers has disappeared in the past few years. The basis for this article should, therefore, be the term "webdesign" itself. Because this is the two major components of the job: Web and Design, after which the necessary skills can be wonderfully broken down. Of course, it is not utopian that every web designer masters everything very well in all these areas. But that's not what it's all about, but rather about having sufficient knowledge always to be able to see the entire project in mind.

Web languages

The first part of the word already tells you what each web design. But there is also a framework which knowledge makes sense: All the technologies that are related to the web, so at least:

These coding languages are the foundation for proper frontend development. Especially notable: Javascript is not just JQuery. Even if the library contains a lot of what is useful in your daily work, Javascript can do a lot more. At least all web designer should have an understanding of those coding languages, even if he/she may not even work on the final code itself. Having additional coding experience with backend development or certain libraries and frameworks, of course, do not hurt. Also crucial for larger projects are Git and accordingly Github or Gitlab, to which almost all companies rely on code and projects.

Usability

The large abbreviations UI and UX can now be found in almost every job advertisement. That's no wonder because an application can still be so good – without a functioning user interface, it will not be very useful. The best-known example of this is undoubtedly Apple, which invented neither the first MP3 player, nor the first smartphone, but instead each of the devices on the market, which was the best to use.

Not every heuristic needs to be known to you, and Jacob Nielsen and Steve Krug are not the only authors on your bookshelf. But you should know the difference between user experience (UX, the experience of use) and user interface (UI, the interface the user interacts with) and also know how to score in both areas, rather than the users through strange design decisions to bounce. The accessibility in web design now plays an increasingly important role, especially in public websites.

SEO

Hopefully, you don't have to deal with SEO, because there are now SEO specialist in most companies. But that does not mean that you do not have to deal with the topic at all. It is also essential for you to be able to classify yourself which elements of the website influence the Google ranking – and also what you should refrain from doing. This increases the success of the page and thus the satisfaction of your customer/employer, but also gives you an additional reading of how good your job is.

Analytic Tools

Well, how did your last project go? It is never wrong to know exactly how to perform an analysis, which tools are the most meaningful and to be able to go through these evaluations yourself. This shows you what works and what does not. This retrospective is critical to improving your skill further.

Digital design

It's a basic requirement for a good web designer to have an eye for design, but also fun to look for new trends and work with them. Some basic principles should be taken into account when assessing new ideas. It's about:

A pink website with green text will attract as few visitors as a page that works in each paragraph with a new font or wildly distributed content across the site. These three topics are the basis of every website and every design.

Software

There is no recommendation as to which specific software every web designer has to master. The Adobe Creative Suite is often named, but it is not always necessary, especially if there are graphic designers in the project. In any case, it makes sense to be able to implement at least photo editing and the composition of elements with a program. An IDE that you can handle very well and which is specially adapted to your needs is a must to make your work as efficient as possible. After all, tools for visualizing ideas and software for mockups and sketching are also worthwhile to discuss your ideas quickly without having to implement a whole website.

Soft skills

In professional life, even more, skills are needed. Those who are self-employed must have business sense and – less a soft skill – also sufficient knowledge in business administration to handle their own business. In any case, a pure appearance, negotiation skills, and the talent to outline an idea clearly and comprehensible, to understand the wishes of the client and to adjust in case of doubt appropriately.

Of course, there are also web designers who deliberately specialize in something or bring other skills on their own, and there is another difference between salaried and freelance web designers, especially regarding soft skills and the prerequisite software knowledge. Overall, however, this list should be a good starting point for everyone, which can be added as desired.

Quick Tip: Speed up Your Design Process With Studio

In today's quick tip I'm going to introduce you to "Studio", a design tool for digital products. Let's see how it can help speed up your design process!

Over the years we've all become familiar with using tools like Photoshop, Adobe XD, or Sketch, to design layouts and interfaces. Studio takes a slightly different approach to the design process.

It's a web-based tool, currently free to use, so if you'd like to sign up or sign in head over to https://studio.design/ and enter your credentials.

You'll be greeted with a Projects page, ready and waiting for your first project if you've just signed up. When starting a new project you'll be given the option of designing a web project, or an iPhone app.

The Tools

Once you kick off a project you'll see a page (similar to an artboard in other design applications), some zoom and view controls, and to the left you'll see that you can add boxes, images, text, and icons. Those are pretty much all you can add, so there's immediately a difference between Studio and other UI design apps you might be used to!

Studios interfaceStudio's interface

This apparent lack of flexibility is soon quashed however, when you see that the left hand sidebar also gives access to a range of pre-built elements (UI kits). The UI kits contain common elements and patterns, such as nav bars, hero sections, forms, and so on. You'll also find embed blocks, through which you can also drag and drop Google Maps, videos etc. onto your page.

Crucially, all of Studio's layout elements are responsive; they alter in size and arrangement depending on the size of the page you're designing. This is key in how Studio works and how it can alter the way you design interfaces.

Take a look at the video above for more details on how to use Studio, its tools, and its resources. Let us know what you think of Studio in the comments!

The case for making your own design tools

"Building your own tools" in the modern era can take many forms. The video game industry has done a good job of this, creating specific game design platforms like Unreal Engine and Unity 3D, and then building studio-specific tools on top of these. Legendary animation studio Pixar got a leg up in the 80s and 90s by creating RenderMan, a proprietary rendering application that was eventually embraced throughout Hollywood. Even Airbnb has its own tools for creating charming animations and generating code from low-fi wireframes.

Even as a relatively small, young design studio, Topp has put effort into shaping our own tools as well. The most notable example is Noodl, a digital prototyping platform that we use for building and sharing IoT, app and connected device experiences, internally and with clients. It took several years to build, but the effort's been well worth it. The domains we work in are mostly brand new, which means any commercially available prototyping tools are already behind the curve.

Building our own tool lets us react to emerging technology in real time, and constantly improve the speed and fidelity of our prototypes. It also makes the tools themselves part of what we offer our clients: something we can shape to their needs, and use enable collaboration and feedback.

But even more important is this:

Using tools we've created helps us keep control of our own design culture, and hang on to the sense of exploration and self-determination that drew us to design in the first place.

It's also a unique opportunity to design for ourselves — a taste of our own medicine, so to speak, that makes us more empathetic to the plight of clients and collaborators.

We won't lie: building Noodl was a monumental task. But it wasn't impossible, it wasn't unpleasant, and we learned a tremendous amount along the way. Just as the tools for doing design work have gotten more powerful and easier to use, so have the tools for building the tools.

This DIY approach isn't just limited to gee-whiz technological tools either. There's also plenty of value to be found in building conceptual and strategic tools.

So while some of us in the studio work on updating Noodl, others are identifying and cataloging effective UX patterns, creating reusable libraries of illustrations and animations, and writing up effective strategies for communicating research insights. We've recently started codifying the key attributes of successful creative workshops, based on our experiences hosting hundreds of them. Each of these organized observations becomes a tool in its own right, smaller but far more personal and powerful than anything publicly available.

And it doesn't have to stop there. If you're fed up with the results of traditional brainstorming, invent your own idea generation technique. If you have user researchers on staff who consistently get great results, encourage them to outline their process, and write it down. Whatever you've gotten good at through trial and error can — and should — be turned into a tool.

Building your own tools isn't just a task for engineers; it's a philosophy for good design, for every designer.

Design is an exploratory discipline, but that doesn't mean we need to keep reinventing the wheel. If you've found something that's worked four times, chances are it'll also work the fifth, and that's worth solidifying. No matter what your experience level, building or customizing tools is a worthwhile pursuit.

Carrier Celebrates 30 Years of HAP Energy Modeling Software

Carrier is celebrating the 30th birthday of its Hourly Analysis Program with its engineering customers around the world. The celebration commemorates the original launch of HAP and its evolution over the past three decades. Introduced in 1987, HAP was among the first hour-by-hour energy modeling tools to run on an engineer's own desktop computer.

Before HAP software was available, energy modeling was accomplished manually or with software tools run on the vendor's mainframe computer. The original HAP software was groundbreaking by making energy modeling more affordable, accessible and flexible for engineers.

In addition, HAP was one of the first tools to offer seamlessly integrated system design and energy modeling capabilities for heating, ventilating and air conditioning applications. Over the past 30 years, HAP has continuously improved to keep pace with changes in HVAC technology industry practices, ASHRAE standards and computer technology. It is now used by engineering firms worldwide.

"It's important for us to celebrate this anniversary with our HAP subscribers, as their engagement and feedback over the years has been key to HAP's longevity and success," said Chris Opie, director, North America commercial marketing. "Through literally thousands of interactions — with our software help desk experts, in training classes, surveys and focus groups — our customers have guided us in advancing the software and keeping it at the leading edge of HVAC engineering tools."

He added: "Those customer consultations have led us to create a new generation of HAP software starting with HAP version 6.0, [which] will include graphical methods for defining building floor plans and elevations, to greatly improve modeling productivity as well as advances in load calculation and simulation capabilities."

How to Get Started in UX/UI Design?

As most UX designers may tell you, there is no prescribed path to becoming a UX designer. Some designers may start with degrees in arts, others were trained in architecture school, while some even came from entirely different professions. Not a few designers have been broken into this field without any formal training, with a genuine empathy for others and the belief of making lives better through design.

However, it's not easy to land an entry-level UX position, and many new-comers may get lost by the interchangeability of design terms, like UX and UI. So before diving deeper into starting a career in UX, let's take a quick look at the two different terms in below.

What Is UX/UI Design?

At the very start, let's define UX & UI design before moving on to our point:

UX Design (User Experience Design) — is all about enhancing user satisfaction and designing the complete user experience. UX requests a solid understanding of sociology, psychology as well as design to identify and address the real user problems. Also it requires tactical skills, including concept iteration, user research, prototyping and usability testing. One of the most critical skills for UX designers would be communication.

UI Design (User Interface Design) — is all about selecting the right interface elements, such as text fields, buttons, check boxes and drop-down lists, to create the tangible interfaces that users can readily understand and easily use. In small-sized companies, UI designers may conduct the entire process from user flows to hi-fidelity mockups; In large-sized companies, they are likely to specialize more in defining the layout of an app or website (that's what we call "Sketch" or "Wireframing").

The ultimate goal of UX and UI design is making the user's interaction as time efficient and simple as possible. Also the lines between UX and UI designers are always blurred in accordance with different company size and demands. For more information about frequently confused design terms like UX, UI, IA, IxD.

How to Become a UX Designer?

There is no need to repeat others' career path, and below are some practical advices for those who are thinking of stepping into UX design industry.

1. Get Yourself Educated

This does not mean you have to go invest in a university degree, but a formalized education won't hurt. There are may higher education UX courses and programs out there, while it's not a necessary step to break into the UX field. Just as one UX expert put: "If you are a 'lifelong learner', in other words, if you are paying attention, you will be able to take previous experience and apply lessons learned from them to your new situation. That is more important to me than specific skills you might learn in school."

Here is a comprehensive list of recommended UX/UI books, which would form a good starting point. On a more informal level, you can take participation in various online courses, and following are some recommendable learning resources.

General Assembly — They specialize in today's most in-demand skills, offering a complete program in UX design. It's possible to take different kinds of workshops and classes, as well as attend as a part-time or full-time student.

DesignLab — An authorized design program that would pair students with experienced mentors. Their courses vary between 4–6 weeks and charge around $300.

Udemy — As a competitor to Lynda, their pre-course pricing makes it a great supplement to designer's education. There are some free pre-introductory courses there.

Lynda — All courses on the site have good reputation, requiring you to subscribe before accessing them. There is a 10-day free trial and the pricing goes from $25/mo.

Fundamentals of UX Design — It's coming from Tuts Web Design, consisting of sixteen 2-hour lessons at the fee of $15.

Insights of the industry-leading UXers and PMs in China

UX Apprentice — Cost-free courses and learning resources for anyone who is looking to learn the basics.

Aside from articles and online courses, you can also engage in design communities, ranging from visual design websites like Behance and Dribbble, to more comprehensive websites, like UX Magazine. Being a part of a community will make self-learning less intimidating and you can get inspired by others' creative ideas. More websites and blog resources to get you educated.

2. Take Advantage of the Right Tools

Since you have learned the fundamentals, you still need to practice your knowledge under real environment. UX design is not just working in front of a screen, and you have to be taught how to create interactive wireframes and conduct usability testing sessions. Both require software to achieve. Considering of ease-of-use and included features, here are the most recommended tools:

Axure

Established in May 2002, Axure is considered as the standard in interactive wireframe software and recommended for professional designers looking for sophisticated prototyping capabilities. It does help user experience professionals, product manager and business analyst as well, but is far from an ideal choice for beginners for its steep learning curve.

Justinmind

As a flexible prototyping tool, Justinmind supports multi-platforms and can work well for simple click-through prototypes or complex interactions. The device-specific templates and gesture-based interaction set it apart from other tools. However, the free version is somehow limiting and its moderate learning curve still keeps many first-time users away.

Balsamiq

Founded by a former senior engineer of Adobe in 2008, Balsamiq has appeared to be one of the best wireframing program providers in the industry. As is advertised "Life is too short for bad software", Balsamiq Mockup allows simple elements and fast design creation for websites & mobile apps. It may have a top limit on the quality of created mockups and the lack of template window is another downside.

InVision

InVision is a US-based company that takes many useful customization and import options from Marvel, with more collaboration features included. A highlight is you can share completed mockups through the in-built LiveShare tool, which is more effective than sending a .PDF file. While this viewer app is only compatible with iOS devices like iPhone and iPad, with no support for Android and Windows Phone.

Mockplus

Developed by a team of passionate developers from the orient, Mockplus is a relatively new player in the industry. It's a rapid prototyping tool to turn design ideas into functional prototypes faster, smarter and easier. It's visualized interactions and drag-and-drop UI largely simplify the design process and keep designer focused on the graphic quality and content. Live preview can be achieved by scanning QR code and the most recent 2.19 version will add 3000 vector icons. Its educational offer is awaiting for fresh minds.

Beyond any doubt, there will be other alternatives on the market, with both pluses and minuses existing the same time. For those who are in need of testing and analytic tools, here are the recommendations:

A/B Testing Tools, which aim to help test one or multiple elements on certain page to see which received the most action. These types of tools can be purchased on monthly basis. Some popular choices are A/B Test Master,Intuition, Myna, UsabilityTools.

Web Analytics Tools, which give you better understanding of website traffic and visitor behavior from both optimization and conversion perspective.Google Analytics is my tool of choice.

User Feedback Tools, which enable you to gather user information and feedback. Some general tools include Mechanical Turk, UsabilityHub and Ethnio.

3. Find Yourself a Mentorship

Mentoring is rewarding, and a high-quality mentorship can be an important part of a designer's growth process. You don't need to catch up as often with a potential mentor, but try to soak up everything that an experienced UX designer can offer you when talking on Skype or taking a quick coffee.

It may be daunting to find a mentor as UX professionals are always busy, but you may find a mentor through some communities you join or some courses you take. Take a look at this article on how to find your design mentor and also consider whether you want to pay for a mentorship service. It's true that almost anyone you respect can serve as design mentor, and just talk to everyone you can and be open to different opinions.

4. Get Some Experience & Hired

No one can become a successful UX designer without building things. Almost every UX designer starts with some jobs to practice their skills. That's where online portfolio comes in handy. Just like a UI designer would have an A3 portfolio that shows posters, logos as well as t-shirts designed by himself, you need to present examples of your created deliverables.

It's great to propose an apprenticeship or internship at a company, and your portfolio will be a great help that tells a story about the process you follow will be a great help. Generally, the more you've learned, the more opportunities will open up for you. This could be a virtuous cycle in which you can learn and grow.

Bottom Line

At last, here's a quote written by Ivan Glass to share with all people who have been planning or just wondering to break into the UX world. Enjoy the ride!

"Nobody tells this to people who are beginners, I wish someone told me. All of us who do creative work, we get into it because we have good taste. But there is this gap. For the first couple years you make stuff, it's just not that good. It's trying to be good, it has potential, but it's not. But your taste, the thing that got you into the game, is still killer. And your taste is why your work disappoints you. A lot of people never get past this phase, they quit. Most people I know who do interesting, creative work went through years of this. We know our work doesn't have this special thing that we want it to have. We all go through this. And if you are just starting out or you are still in this phase, you gotta know its normal and the most important thing you can do is do a lot of work."

Dropbox really screwed up its new design

We all know something is awfully wrong with the new Dropbox design, a design Dropbox says it's the biggest change to the Dropbox brand in their 10-year history (might not necessarily be the best).

In this post, I attempt to simplify where Dropbox went wrong and why all the noise you've been hearing is something they should look into.

What is design?

In simple terms, design is all about reducing the friction between users and their goals. Design is not only software. There are various design systems around us.

Nowadays, companies employ design to reduce the friction between users and their goals and to convert visitors into recurrent users of their product.

Dropbox's Problem

We all know what Dropbox is — a storage service. Simple as that.

Another thing that's also simple is that Dropbox is boring and it's not a household name. Storing files is boring. Recovering files is boring. A lot of other apps and products you use actually use Dropbox for storage but we couldn't care less.

Now the problem is that Dropbox is a rich company. Rich companies want to get richer but mere file storage as a service won't cut it. A lot of us use the free tier of Dropbox. To get richer, Dropbox needs to build products that people love to use every day. Something they have tried with both Mailbox and Carousel. Needless to say, both didn't work out so well and Mailbox was shut down on February 26, 2016.

Enter Dropbox Paper. Paper is Dropbox's latest attempt to create an everyday product users will actively interact with. It has received a reasonable amount of love so far and now Dropbox is trying to create a lot of buzz for their new baby.

Dropbox and the basics of design

Another thing has just become clear  —  Dropbox's redesign is because of Paper.

Their new logo, images, and language overhaul is all because of Paper. Now where's the problem?

1. Branding and identity
  • Identity  —  You produce it, and you market it. In order to get enough attention from potential customers to convert them, you need to communicate well with them to get them to know your product. You want to show them your identity over and over again till they recognize you unconsciously. Not 49 variants of your logo.
  • Branding  —  This is how people perceive your product. Great design well serves your product in establishing positive perceptions by potential and current customers. Uber? Airbnb?
  • It looks like Dropbox is going about their identity and branding well, except that they're not. Their concepts lack empathy, it lacks any personal connection with the users.

At the core of design is people, So it's important to have empathy for the user.

Take their logos for instance, the image below are only the ones they showed on Dropbox.design, I wonder how many more are in their raw "dropbox_logos.ai" file. Great brands are known for their logos in terms of color and uniqueness  —  Starbucks, for example, is known for their green color while Netflix is known to be red. Dropbox? The jack of all colors, master of none.27 variants of one logo. Lost identity

    2. Color
  • Product  —  Our brains always like to focus on brands that are immediately recognizable. In order to create the product look engaging and recognizable, you have to use the colors properly that align with your business ideas, personality and emotion.
  • Users  —  For users, different colors mean different things. Once again empathy comes into play as you want to use a color that interprets your brand well and rests easy with your users depending on the product or service you're offering e.g G-Shock wristwatches are usually very durable and tough = black.
  • The New Dropbox

To a new or recurring user what does this color mean? What do all the million colors they've combined mean? How do I relate to these? Let me make a quick case of why they should have stuck with Blue as their primary color (if they still have a color system).

Blue is one of the most commonly used colors when coming to product design. Once you see a product that's blue, you're calm and you already feel like you're in familiar territory. The blue color is considered to give emotions such as trust, safe (Dropbox storage) + creativity and calmness (Dropbox Paper).

Sounds like a match made in heaven right? Dropbox didn't think so.

    3. Typography

This is where they totally lost me. Typography is just as sensitive as color.

But they got this all wrong by a wide margin most people sincerely thought there was something wrong with their browsers. This makes reading so hard. This is a headache

You don't have to "speak in a variety of tones." You don't need to "speak in a variety of tones." Find your voice and be known for that. Create an identity for your brand. Trying to satisfy everyone satisfies no one.

Standalone, nothing is bad. This typeface is not bad but the implementation is horrific. It makes scanning the website impossible, it makes reading a chore. The line-spacing is wrong, and the font looks stretched horizontally sometimes. Other times, it looks stretched vertically. How hard is it to pick a font that works? Scrap that. How hard is it to continue with whatever font you were using already?

    4. Consistency

As a brand, you want to maintain consistency across your web pages, products and everything else. It makes you organized, sorted and life is easier for your users. They know what they're expecting before they see it and interaction is seamless. Remember when I said design is reducing friction between users and their goals? Sadly, Dropbox doesn't believe in consistent systems.1. Font consistency is null2. Color and content alignment makes each page extra work before you can consume the information3. Lack of icon consistency on dropbox.com/paper

Strong visual hierarchy and composition will guide your eyes fluidly across a layout. Poor visual hierarchy will result in miscommunication or confusion. Repetition and rhythm = scanning efficiently.

From coders to 3D designers, software testers to web designers and app creators, Cornwall tech sector is recruiting

From coders to 3D designers, software testers to web designers and app creators, the job opportunities Cornwall's thriving tech sector offer are vast and varied - and demand for talented individuals does not look like it will slow down anytime soon.

Firms of all sizes are recruiting right left and centre - or more likely they are trying to recruit the right candidates but Cornwall is not the South East or London and the talent pool is not as deep.

"It can be difficult to recruit within the county," said Michael Todd, from Engineered Arts, the home of RoboThespian and one of the sponsors of this year's Cornwall EDGE Awards (Excellent in Digital, Gadgetry and Entrepreneurialism).

"That's why we're changing our tactic and have shifted from looking for the ready made article towards recruiting smart school leavers we can train in-house."

Mr Todd said most firms have no issues recruiting skilled individuals regardless of where they are from, and many in the sector have a diverse workforce generally blending Cornwall born and bred staff with British and foreign staff mainly from the EU.

"The tech sector remains a well paid sector," Mr Todd added. "Especially compared with some of Cornwall's other industries. It is thriving. It forms a huge part of the economy and I don't think we as a society are going to suddenly want less tech.

"It will keep growing. We will need more tech and that means coders and software engineers will continue to be in high demand."

Read More The 2017 Cornwall Edge Awards

Engineered Arts currently employs 17 staff and has room for two or three more in the short term. The Penryn company also has one apprentice and one intern on its payroll but that will grow too as the firm increasingly looks to recruit college or university students or even school leavers it can train up to suit its needs.

Craig Girvan and Toby Parkins, the co-founders of Headforwards (Image: Headforwards)

Toby Parkins, co-founder and director of software company Headforwards and chairman of the industry group Tech South West, said: "Digital transformation is happening in every successful business. In order to achieve maximum success in this transformation the need for talent and culture are the key requirements.

"This means recruiting, training and retaining great, talented people is very important. The culture within an organisation is also of key importance.

"Companies need to be focusing on how to improve their internal cultures so that talented people can thrive, use their creativity to produce exceptionally brilliant work."

He added: "Cornwall is the perfect environment for businesses looking to drive forward and improve their talent and culture. This backdrop will enable Cornish businesses who are forward looking to move forward by both improving their employee opportunities whilst driving productivity upwards."

"With regard to specific skills, we are currently seeing a growing need for Microsoft development languages, in particular the language .net. As organisations utilise Office 365 and then more Sharepoint solutions, the natural progression is to increase their internal application development using .net.

The tech sector is booming in Cornwall and is recruiting hard - but only if you have the right skills (Image: Getty Images)

"I'm not saying there will be a decline in open source but we're sensing that the pendulum has swung recently towards Python and this will therefore provide opportunities for .net developers. It should be emphasised that knowledge of three languages as a minimum should be encouraged with the harder C/C++ always being valuable.

"There is also evidence to show that some functional programming languages such as Go, Scala, may become increasingly important in the future."

"Of course we need to be doing more to improve training within Cornwall, like people have been saying for decades. The reality though is even if 500 graduates a year were graduating in computing related subjects, we still wouldn't have the exact combination of specialisms and experience.

"Superfast Broadband has been brilliant for enabling tech businesses to thrive in Cornwall. The next step is to create ultra high speed hubs and physical spaces where tech businesses can work together with the wider business community to invent the innovative new applications and IT solutions that will take businesses forward into the future. In this way, the tech sector benefits together with other Cornish businesses."

Paul Massey, director and co-founder of Internet of Things company Bluefruit, said the firm employed 43 staff but was looking to recruit another 10.

He said: "We expect to grow by at least 50 per cent over the next 12 months.

"We are primarily looking for experienced software engineers in both embedded software and cloud computing – predominately C++ and C# programmers. But we are also looking for a range of other tech roles include test engineers and a sales engineer.

"The demand for these jobs is just going to keep growing. Businesses who invest in skills and training will thrive – those who don't will struggle."

How do you foster Cornwall's tech talent?

Most companies, from Bluefruit Software in Pool to AI experts Hertzian in Truro, work increasingly closely with both Truro and Penwith College and Cornwall College as well as with Falmouth University and even some schools directly.

A Skills Hub has been developed as a new signposting service that offers business a free skills review and then matches them with the right skills and training provision, helping them develop their staff and grow their business at the same time.

But the training has to start in schools and there's a huge amount of work that's being done to ensure schools and colleges are getting kids involved in tech and making coding fun and interesting.

Truro and Penwith College, which is also supporting our EDGE Awards, and Cornwall College have been working on a programme to entice young people into the courses that will put them on a tech career path in Cornwall.

Several of Cornwall's leading technology companies are working closely with Cornwall's further education providers to create tailor-made courses that suit the needs of the industry.

    Cornwall EDGE Awards 2017 sponsors

Falmouth University has made it its mission to be at the heart of the digital sector's home-grown talent development.

The university's Academy of Innovation and Research, the university's research themes of digital economy, smart design and creative, Connected communities, specifically address the social and economic challenges of the county and the world at large – from health and wellbeing and climate change to our aging society and our growing energy needs.

This year saw the first cohort join the university's ground-breaking postgraduate business incubation programme, Launchpad. Specifically designed to foster the creation of start-up businesses in Cornwall, it is predicted that Launchpad will create 526 new high-value jobs and 65 new companies all across Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly by 2023.

Vice-chancellor Ann Carlisle at Falmouth University, said: "Launchpad reverses the usual start-up model; instead of starting with an idea for a product or service, Launchpad students respond to a problem.

"Global companies including Hitachi, Amazon, Sony Interactive Entertainment and the BBC pitch a challenge to the Launchpad students, a request for something they want developed, but don't have the expertise or capacity to tackle in-house.

"Mentored by industry experts and guided by the industry partners, the students then develop a response to the challenge and in doing so, create a viable, marketable product."

Launchpad is one of Falmouth University's success stories

Mr Massey said that Bluefruit was actively working with local education providers to nurture local talent and keep them here.

He added: "We are running regular Easter schools, summer schools, apprenticeships, traineeships and other outreach activities. Currently we hire about half our staff through this homegrown pipeline. Cornwall has an interesting tech skills environment – there is a huge amount of raw talent."

Kim Conchie, chief executive officer of the Cornwall Chamber of Commerce, said Cornwall may be the best place on earth to work with everything it has to offer such as superfast broadband, a beautiful landscape, low crime rate, good schools, clean air and, more importantly, a proper career structure in the tech sector, the county is still struggling to attract the "bright young people at the top of their game".

He said: "For too many people Cornwall is not seen as a valuable career choice so they either start out here then leave or come towards the tail end of their career.

"Despite everything Cornwall has to offer we still struggle to attract the skills people in their twenties, thirties and forties.

"But our tech sector continues to thrive and is recruiting. If you have the software programming skills and a creative streak the firms here will almost create a job for you."

Mr Conchie said he was working hard with tech sector leaders to launch a recruitment campaign which will be launched in London next year to show off Cornwall as the right place to have a career in the sector.

What sort of jobs are available in the tech industry in Cornwall?

There are plenty of coding jobs and software developer opportunities around and wages will vary from £22,000 to £55,000 for the right person and skills.

That's the bracket Engineered Arts tends to put on all the jobs it offers with everything being negotiable.

The firm is currently looking for a 3D designer, a mechanical design engineer and a software developer.

But if you look on Software Cornwall's website, you will see dozens of job opportunities for everything from app creators to test analysts, senior technical project manager and compliance officer to developers with certain skills like .net or JavaScript software writing knowhow.

James Fisher Marine Services is currently looking for a software engineer for its Falmouth office.

"You will also have light IT responsibilities in helping to keep our services operational, so general networking experience would be an advantage," the cmpany said.

On the Software Cornwall job page, Headforwards advertises its jobs saying: "Did you know the tech industry in Cornwall is one of the fastest growing in the UK? "Whilst our work is project/client based, you won't find anyone sitting on the bench here – you're more likely to find us on the beach. Or paddleboarding, surfing, building robots…all sorts really."

A strong website is the perfect mix of visual appeal and data support. For big businesses and small startups alike, the right online presence can make or break sales goals. Your website should be like another home for your business. It is a place to introduce yourself to potential clients and build relationships with returning customers. As such, one of the best investments you can make is hiring a web design service.

Trusting a professional to get the job done ensures your website looks as good as possible. He or she will make your brand come to life and give it a timeless touch to compete in the world wide web.

Here are a few things to do when looking for the best design service to hire.

    1. Decide Your Direction

Before you even start searching for the right designer, you need to know what you're looking for. Some web designers will be stronger in back-end production than front-end aesthetics, and vice versa.Back-end design requires a working knowledge of coding and data security. This is the process of building your site from scratch. Back-end means anything from making landing pages to handling navigation systems. On the other hand, front-end is the creative-driven, visual aspects. A designer who specializes in front-end knows how to make stellar graphics and stand-out branding strategies. Their skills range from beautiful websites to strong proposal templates, like those at Bidrik. If you want a fully-done, strong website, you need a service that does both.

    2. Look at Previous Work

Once you start picking through different web design service providers, be sure to look at their past projects. The more you search for work examples, the better you get an idea of what a service can do for you. Past projects are a good way to understand the level of quality and the design directions you can expect. You can also use what has already been done as a building block to make your new website.Has a particular design service made websites for similar businesses in your industry? Is there something in a portfolio that stands out and you want to mimic? The answers to these questions will help guide your decision. They can point you to the ideal professional to build the perfect website.

    3. Set Clear Expectations

Before you commit to working with your web design service of choice, have a conversation about your goals and expectations.Tell them everything from the feeling you wish to embody to the conversion rates you want. Ask if you will have editing rights after the initial project is complete. Set a strict deadline and checkpoints along the way to stay on track.Such expectations may seem a little excessive, but they help ensure your website is everything you want it to be. Talk about both the back-end support you need and the front-end visuals you're imagining.Every detail counts – clear expectations can cut down the editing process significantly. This get your website up and running as soon as possible.

See the Difference a Professional Web Design Service Can Make

You know your business from the inside out, but you need to have an effective way of sharing it with your audience.A well-designed, high-functioning website can be the perfect introduction. In fact, 85% of consumers will leave a poorly designed website.Make a powerful first impression for all the right reasons. Here are some innovative design trends to discuss with your web designer and set yourself apart from the rest.

Some names you may know, like David Airey, Chris Spooner and John O'Nolan.
