Hovering your finger over the big red "launch" button for your new website? Hold off for just a second (or 660 of them, rather). There may be SEO considerations you haven't accounted for yet, from a keyword-to-URL content map to sweeping for crawl errors to setting up proper tracking. As many of you know, I am a big fan of web performance. But I also don't think that it should or have to compromise design. There is always a good balance in the middle. The other day I was on GitHub's blog and was really digging their font! It was super easy to read. So I dug into the properties with Chrome Devtools and saw that they were using a system font stack. So today I want to show you how to use a system font stack on your WordPress site.

Custom scrollbars are getting popular, and you might have come across websites that have unique scrollbars, making the sites feel and look different. There are basically a few ways to implement a custom scrollbar. In this tutorial we will be using CSS3, which is the most straightforward way. However, there are jQuery plugins that can help with customizing scrollbar, but I do not like to add more JavaScript to my website. If you are a designer, photographer or you just want your website to have a cool scrollbar, go ahead with the jQuery plugins.scroll bars Best of the web for Design and Web Development April 2017

In all my years of SEO consulting, I've seen many clients with wild misconceptions about XML sitemaps. They're a powerful tool, for sure — but like any power tool, a little training and background on how all the bits work goes a long ways.

Make the Right First Impression with Your Website’s Design

The old saying is, "You never get a second chance to make a first impression." This holds true especially with your company website.

The design of your website has the power to intrigue and entice your viewers, or send them straight to your competitors. With a well-designed website, your company can potentially increase and maintain web traffic and visibility, leading to greater sales and a better bottom-line. According to Aberdeen, Embracing Change in Wholesale and Distribution, online ecommerce has altered the way organizations take orders and how they get their products into the hands of their customers. As retailers continue to increase global transactions, they must adapt to enhancing the user experience by presenting customers with more immersive and interactive web interfaces.

Many businesses today are dependent on web traffic for their success. A user friendly website is essential if your organization plans to remain competitive and, ultimately profitable. A site that is too complex will push away the traffic you need to stay in business. The happier the user experience, the more likely your existing and potential customers will return to make a purchase.

Following are 3 key ways to help you make the right first impression through your website's design:

Keep it Simple

When creating a website, keep in mind that a constructive design will be one that helps users quickly and effectively navigate through your site to find what they're looking for. To manage this, try simplifying your drop down and navigation bars, using legible fonts at proper sizes, and good, balanced color schemes. Incorporate engaging visuals in the form of images and videos to entice viewers who may be looking to skim around quickly and return later for more a more in depth look.

If the experience impedes visitors from getting to where they want to go on your website, you have a problem. If you keep it simple, you decrease the chances of someone leaving your site frustrated, and increase the likelihood that visitors will not only easily find what they're looking for, but also ensure their return, and recommend your site to other potential customers.

Go Mobile

One of the most popular ways to make your website mobile friendly is through a method called Responsive Design. This is done by adding media queries to your site's style sheets, which contain information to automatically size your website to the specific device it is being viewed on. As consumer's access websites from a growing variety of devices, responsive Web design becomes increasingly important.

Today, people have grown accustomed to anytime, anywhere web access. From large screens to small screens, from desktops to handhelds, users now have the ability to shop and search when it is most convenient. Including a responsive design element in your website will naturally increase your ability to accommodate a wider audience. The popularity of smartphones and tablets as a way of accessing the internet has risen rapidly in recent years, and will only increase in the foreseeable future.

Encourage Communication

Communication is vital with customers in any business, and your website can accomplish this in a variety of user friendly ways. Your site should allow them to take immediate steps to getting the information they need. Adding essential communication tools such as requesting a quote, inquiring about a product, inviting a user to live chat, and providing a feedback form will give visitors instant access to you. Although users aren't face to face with a company representative, it's important to make your consumers feel that you are just a click away from helping them out with all of their needs.

Increasing and maintaining website traffic is a common challenge for all businesses. It's all about making the right first impression, and maintaining the experience for repeat visitors. Just like in life, the first few seconds of a face to face conversation can make or break the relationship moving forward. You have the power to make the best first impression with the design of your website, and these key ways, if implemented properly, can make a big difference.

Web & mobile prototyping, UX, product management: April’s best posts

6 must-read posts on wireframing, interactive prototyping, UX and product design from April's blogosphere

Interactive prototyping confessions, user survey best practices, UX predictions and UI tips – April's interweb brought us some awesome posts to enjoy and learn from. Whether you're in dire need of a design process spring clean or you're wondering how to future-proof your UX career, these posts are bound to inspire you. Plus don't forget to check out Justinmind's latest post on Creative Bloq, 10 essential TED Talks for UX Designers!

The Six Essential Books that Every Product Manager Should Read

Product manager Rosemary King takes to Mind the Product to list 6 books that will help PMs stay "voraciously curious" about digital product management and design. While these absolutely positively must-read posts are always subjective, Rosemary works hard to make the case for each title she includes.

For example, in her summary of Alan Cooper's 'The Inmates Are Running the Asylum: Why High Tech Products are Driving us Crazy and How to Restore Sanity" she points out that Cooper was one of the first (but certainly not the last) to apply the term cognitive friction to product design.

She also points PMs towards great but lesser known resources such as Leah Buley's 'The User Experience Team of One: A Research and Design Survival Guide'.

The Essential Guide to Writing Effective Survey Questions

Designing a user survey is easy, right? Just Google it. Whoa there, says UXer Jennifer Lee Brown. In her UXBooth post on writing effective survey questions, Jennifer points out that Google will render more than 68,000,000 results for 'survey best practices'.

So how can inexperienced user researchers ensure they're getting user surveys right? The post presents some tried and true methods for eliciting actionable responses and data from users. Justinmind's UXers loved the sections on talking 'like a real person' and using ratings effectively.

The Web Looks Like Shit

Hanson O'Haver's amazing post 'The Web Looks Like Shit' pulls no punches. Hanson breaks down everything that's crappy about our everyday online experiences, from auto-play banner ads to content that fails to load. Focusing the post on sites that are traffic or ad-revenue driven, the post examines why these sites so often deliver 'crufty' user experiences and makes the case for cleaning up the web.

While Hanson doesn't offer any solutions to the problem, he does provide a heck of a lot of food for thought.

10 Ways to Create Great User Onboarding

We couldn't resist sneaking this one in here – Justinmind's first post for WebDesignerDepot! In '10 Ways to Create Great User Onboarding', we focus on user onboarding and its role in ensuring product adoption and high engagement rates. By breaking down exactly what makes for good onboarding the post gets to the nub of onboarding best practices, and provides 10 examples of products that get onboarding right.

Use the post to get inspired to prototype your own onboarding experience with Justinmind!

Why I Prototype

Experience Designer Raveesh Bhalla asks all his clients the same question – "have you ever released a product that you were absolutely certain solves a major pain point, yet it didn't resonate with users?" The answer is pretty much always affirmative, says Raveesh in 'Why I Prototype'.

Prototyping can help, particularly if it allows users to test-drive designs early on in the product design process. Laying bare his personal experiences of designing and building successful software, Raveesh explains the common benefits of application prototyping, such as failing forward and getting user feedback at crucial design points.

Where Will UX Design Be in 5 Years? 5 Predictions

Who doesn't love a prediction post? UX/UI course provider Designlab do the honors this time, with their handful of predictions for what to expect in user experience in the coming years.

The post sets out with a solid examination on user experience past and present, right from Don Norman's first prophetic words through to the so-called 'solved problem' of smartphone design. The post then casts its prophetic gaze towards the future: what impact will new technologies such as VR have on UX? Will new geographical markets open up and what will these new markets change?

The stand-out part of the post is the section on 'qualities of tomorrow's UX designers' – read up on the skills and attributes you'll need to take your career through the next 5 years.

Responsive vs Adaptive Web Design: Better Together

Responsive web design (RWD), the ability for your web application to "respond" to the size of the viewport (traditional screen size vs mobile screen size) is a commonplace practice today. Responsive design leverages client side, front-end UI frameworks to hide, show, stack, shrink and grow elements on the screen in a way that is appropriate for the size of the device's screen. In essence, it is many user interfaces in a single code base.

Adaptive web design (AWD), a (seemingly) alternative approach to RWD is a server-side capability to respond to the client with completely unique templates/markup for a given device type (amongst other facets). Adaptive design, while extremely powerful, is somewhat less common in part because it relies on a server and is thus a less general technology. It's also less prevalent in part because, for a large class of problems, RWD is "enough" to get the job done. However, as complexity and sophistication of requirements mount, adaptive design starts to show clear advantages over a purely responsive approach.

Responsive design and adaptive design are often thought of as an either/or architectural choice. There is clear overlap in the problems they address and each approach has clear strengths and weaknesses over one-another. Let's take a quick look at a side by side comparison.

Comparison Technical Approach

Responsive Design:

Adaptive Design:

Strengths

Responsive Design:

  • Mainstream approach with many frameworks that can be applied to any backend technology.
  • Single code base.
  • Adaptive Design:

  • Truly unique markup can be delivered based on any kind of context (not just screen size). This means it's much easier to deliver contextual functionality to your users.
  • Example: A retail store site has a traditional marketing website at mystore.com. But once it's detected that a user is inside a physical store location, it gives them a personalized in-store assistant to enhance their shopping experience.
  • Performance: with AWD, you send only the data you need for the experience you are delivering.  On slower mobile networks that can make a big difference.
  • Weaknesses

    Responsive Design:

  • A single code base.
  •  The more variations you want to support, the more code and complexity there is in that single code base. This can get out of control.
  • Performance can be an issue.
  • RWD sends all of the code for all variations to every consumer whether or not they will see it in their flow or not. If the amount of code is significant, this can lead to a performance hit on slower/mobile networks.
  • It's difficult (although not impossible) to address different contexts beyond screen size with Responsive design. RWD was really intended for different screen sizes (viewports). Stretching its role beyond that takes the technology out of its wheelhouse.
  • Adaptive Design:

  • You need a server backend to support AWD.
  • Instead of a single UI design and template code base, you potentially have many. If you don't manage and factor the code properly it will be more difficult to maintain.
  • Opportunities

    Responsive Design:

  • Provides a usable experience on any screen size.
  • Adaptive Design:

  • Provides a usable experience on any screen size.
  • Provide faster experiences for your users.
  • Allows you to truly contextualize the experience. Device type/class/screen size is really just the tip of the iceberg. Once the server is involved any type of contextual data (location, previous use, time of day, etc.) can be used to deliver unique and relevant experiences/features to the user. That can be huge.
  • Threats

    Responsive Design:

  • If requirements go beyond screen size, RWD may not be the appropriate solution.
  • If the number of variations is too high performance and code complexity may be an issue.
  • Adaptive Design:

    Better Together

While RWD and AWD are most commonly looked at as competitive approaches, the simple fact is that they are not. These two approaches are, in fact, mutually inclusive with another and can be combined to acquire the benefits of both.

Responsive design is a front-end technology. Adaptive design is a backend technology. Combine them.

Consider leveraging Adaptive design to drive truly unique and contextual markup to the user for what they are doing, on the device of their choice at that moment. Allow the front-end to leverage Responsive frameworks to make sure those experiences flow nicely on a given device. For performance and code maintainability, as your RWD code grows in complexity and size, consider breaking it down into smaller code bases that can be individually delivered to a device by RWD (the server).

A simple example of this is to have AWD templates for Small, Medium, and Large screens. Each with their own unique features and markup. When it comes to the specifics like an iPhone vs a Galaxy smartphone (both considered small), RWD steps in to make the minor adjustments required to provide a perfect fit for the given device type. This makes the code more maintainable and, more importantly, it makes the user's experience much zippier.

Learn Quick Steps on How to Design a Web-Responsive Site

A responsive web design is one which makes use of layouts in such a way that the screen is adaptable to any kind of device. Meaning, you can work with ease and comfort on desktop, laptops and mobile tablets when the site is designed using a web responsive outlay. You can approach a renowned responsive web design center in Mumbai. The set of designers from a trustworthy web designing company in Mumbai will provide you with the right kind of guidance and support, when it comes to designing the site for your very own e-shop. A responsive web design only makes use of CSS and HTML Meta tags.

Responsive websites are simpler to use and such websites have foreground images that tend to change as per the layout. For example, when the user switches from a laptop to a tablet, the webpage adapts automatically to fit the screen size. Creating a responsive website is also cost effective and this is one of the reasons why many online websites are now responsive.

Let us now have a look at a couple of quick fix ideas on how you can make your site a web responsive one, in less than 15 minutes.

Before the actual technique is discussed, you will be taken on a brief explanation on CSS and HTML tags.

    1. CSS stands for Cascading Style sheets. When you want to present a document in CSS style, it can depict information from a mark-up language. CSS files can define the size, color, font, spacing and location of HTML information on a web page. You get a continuous flow and uniform display of information across all pages of a site, when CSS style is being used.

    2. HTML stands for Hyper Text Mark-up Language. As you all must be aware of, HTML is the authoring language used to create documents on the World Wide Web. HTML makes use of variety of tags and attributes to depict documents in a seamless manner.

Now coming over to the technique,

    1. To make the document presentable and easily accessible just make use of CSS and HTML tags. These two magical comp onents can shrink, resize, enlarge, hide or move the content to make it look good on any screen.

    2. You can download easy-to-use snippets or know-how tutorials on CSS and HTML. And then can download the software accordingly.

You can ask an experienced designer from a responsive web design center in Mumbai to have the site created in a simple and lucid style. The web designing company in Mumbai makes sure your clients and customers get a comfortable working comfort, while they log on to your site, as such.

A few insider tips on making the site, the best one

    a) Include a sharp and a precise logo. Make the landing page easily retrievable.

    b) Include a help guide within the site. You can have a Search button inside the site, as well. Wherever a user gets stuck, he/she can type in key words and the help guide arrives.

You have seen several aspects and techniques of a web responsive outlay. Word press sites can also be used to provide a better working c omfort, from the end-user's point of view.

AI in Web Design Industry: a Dominating Force or Just another Tool?

    Published on 21 April 17

Website building has come a long way from hand-coded layouts to templates or drag and drop interfaces. This maturity of design patterns has been beneficial for customers. The new landscape of web design and development has been invaded by Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Automation. The industry is abuzz with the talks of two prominent AI-based website builders currently in the market – Grid and Wix ADI. With Adobe Sensei, the software giant too has made an ambitious and notable attempt to marry machine learning and graphic design. Being an outsourcing website design and development company we are taking a look at the state of AI in the web design and development industry:

How does the AI-based web design tool work?

It's really very simple! The AI assistant would ask you a series of questions in order to determine the nature of your business and the type of website you are interested to create. Then, based on many hours of programmed algorithming, it would determine an optimal combination of branding, design, content, and layout that would help your website to shine. Thus, it would save your web design specialist from painstakingly design each and every website element. They can rather collaborate with you to create the best engaging content for your audience to enjoy.

Is it a threat to the careers of web designers?

Industry experts believe that AI design program would usher in a wave of productivity and creativity that will have positive effects on the design industry. The founder of Grid, Dan Tocchini, envisages Grid as a productivity tool that would be trained and improved by web designers. And the tool in turn would scale their design efforts by eliminating technical tasks and enabling them to focus on creative works.

    What does the future hold?

While some designers believe that website developed by AI design program would possibly appear mechanical and lack the fluidity and grace that a human developer brings into it. Contrarily, some affirm that the role of an average web designer is going to be obsolete. Though, only time will give the final outcome, one thing is for sure that the demand for good designers adept at creating exceptional web experiences will be always there.

    Final words!

Do you agree with the doomsayers? If yes, then what do you think the designers should do to adapt? We are excited to know your views.

3 open source web design templates

In the olden days, creating a website from scratch was easy.

With a basic understanding of HTML, and maybe a little CSS, you could put together a pretty functional web page with very little effort. Throw it onto your web server, and you were good to go.

Of course, you can still code a page like this today. What has changed, for better or for worse, are expectations. As internet connection speeds grew faster, and browsers became more standardized and powerful, people asked more from the web. And websites grew in size and complexity, more and more often we'd see even experienced designers who were comfortable with raw HTML and CSS using design tools and code editors with advanced features just to keep everything straight.

Today, few people design their web pages from scratch. Most opt to use a pre-built template design, custom fit for their content management system of choice. Even developers building complex web applications came to rely on templating libraries to put together the majority of their application.

But what if you want to build a new template for your content management system or static site generator? What if you want to build a simple site with a single landing page, or a small number of static pages that are unlikely to change very often? What if you want to code a JavaScript application but don't want to use a complicated framework or library to build the final output?

There are still a million reasons out there to hand-code a web page. For me, the top reason is control. Web pages are getting increasingly obese as time goes on. But when you design a page from scratch, it's easier to leave out things you don't really need. Do I really need to load in web fonts for this page to look nice? Is jQuery something I need, or can a couple of lines of Vanilla JS accomplish the same thing? Could a little bit of SVG instead of a complex image?

At the same time, there's no point in reinventing the wheel every time you sit down to design something for the web. There probably are common elements you want on every page you build, and modern development tools like Sass and Less make dealing with finicky CSS much easier than it used to be.

For these reasons, using an HTML boilerplate templates and frameworks helps bring you the best of both worlds. It can help bring standardization, an easy-to-use grid for layout, and modern feature support to your pages, but at the same time, they are often simple enough to cut the cruft of anything you're not actually using.

Here are three open source HTML5 templates for you to consider for your next web project.

    Bootstrap

Twitter's Bootstrap is perhaps one of the best-known templating frameworks for creating new web pages. Its ubiquity has led to a backlash from some in the web design community, not so much because of the framework itself but because of the pervasiveness of very simple, almost completely uncustomized implementations of it out in the wild.

But if it has been overused, this probably speaks as much as anything to its usefulness. Bootstrap makes it easy to create a responsive design, and comes with lots of features out of the box: from icons to styled inputs and brings standardization to many common page elements, from breadcrumbs to alerts to pagination. There are also a ton of ready-made themes out there, in case theming isn't your thing.

Bootstrap is available on GitHub under an MIT license.

    HTML5 Boilerplate

My personal favorite for starting with a new project is HTML5 Boilerplate. It includes most of the elements I end up adding to any new web project out of the box: a snippet for analytics, all of the various icon sizes I end up forgetting to look up, and some default CSS and JavaScript templates that help me keep organized.

But it's also fairly lightweight, and if I don't need a particular component for a project, it's easy enough to snip it out and never look back. If you're looking for a balance between minimalist and full featured, HTML5 Boilerplate might hit that sweet spot for you.

HTML5 Boilerplate is on GitHub under an MIT license.

    Skeleton

Skeleton is the lightest framework in the bunch. Weighing in at around 400 lines of code, it's also very easy to work with. If you've worked with web frameworks before and find them to be too bulky or just overkill for what you need, Skeleton provides some good bare bones (hah!) to work with: a simple grid; nicely formatted forms, lists, tables. typography, and other basic elements; and cross-browser support. Everything else is up to you.

Skeleton is on GitHub under an MIT license.

Should you use one of these?

My recommendation is to shop around, try out a few options, and use which one works best for your needs. Hate all three of these options? There are plenty of other options out there. And if you spend a substantial amount of your time creating for the web, consider building out a generic web template that works for you. Despite what some might have you think, you don't need a complicated JavaScript framework just to build a simple front-end, whether for a traditional informational page or a lightweight web application.

You might also check out Initializr, an open source web application that can pre-configure HTML5 Boilerplate, either as a classic or responsive page, or Bootstrap, with only the options you need.

So what about you? Do you have a favorite template or framework for web design? Or do you take a different approach to web design altogether? Let us know in the comments below.

Tool for checking complex computer architectures reveals flaws in emerging design

Posted April 12, 2017; 02:22 p.m. by the Office of Engineering Communications

With backing from some of the largest technology companies, a major project called RISC-V seeks to facilitate open-source design for computer chips, offering the possibility of opening chip designs beyond the few firms that dominate the space. As the project moves toward a formal release, researchers at Princeton University have discovered a series of errors in the RISC-V instruction specification that now are leading to changes in the new system.

The researchers, testing a technique they created for analyzing computer memory use, found over 100 errors involving incorrect orderings in the storage and retrieval of information from memory in variations of the RISC-V processor architecture. The researchers warned that, if uncorrected, the problems could cause errors in software running on RISC-V chips. Officials at the RISC-V Foundation said the errors would not affect most versions of RISC-V but would have caused problems for higher-performance systems.

"Incorrect memory access orderings can result in software performing calculations using the wrong values," said Margaret Martonosi, the Hugh Trumbull Adams '35 Professor of Computer Science at Princeton and the leader of the Princeton team that also includes Ph.D. students Caroline Trippel and Yatin Manerkar. "These in turn can lead to hard-to-debug software errors that either cause the software to crash or to be vulnerable to security exploits. With RISC-V processors often envisioned as control processors for real-world physical devices (i.e., internet of things devices) these errors can cause unreliability or security vulnerabilities affecting the overall safety of the systems."

Krste Asanović, the chair of the RISC-V Foundation, welcomed the researchers' contributions. He said the RISC-V Foundation has formed a working group, headed by Martonosi's former graduate student and co-researcher Daniel Lustig, to solve the memory-ordering problems. Asanović, a professor of electrical engineering and computer science at the University of California-Berkeley, said the RISC-V project was looking for input from the design community to "fill the gaps and the holes and getting a spec that everyone can agree on."

"The goal is to ratify the spec in 2017," he said. "The memory model is part of that."

Lustig, a co-author of Martonosi's recent paper and now a research scientist at NVIDIA, said work was underway to improve the RISC-V memory model.

"RISC-V is in the fortunate position of being able to look back on decades' worth of industry and academic experience," he said. "It will be able to learn from all of the insights and mistakes made by previous attempts."

The RISC-V project essentially offers specifications that guide the hardware and software design of RISC-V processors and software applications. These specifications, known generally as an Instruction Set Architecture, describe the most basic functions of the processor including its arithmetic and logic operations, as well as the way programs use the computer's memory. Hardware designers use the instruction sets when building new chips, and computer programmers rely on it when writing new software.

The vast majority of computers in use today, including the millions of PC and Apple systems, use microprocessors based on instruction sets created by the chip-making giants Intel or ARM (Intel's, for example, is commonly known as x86). By contrast, the RISC-V instruction set has been open source from the start. It was first developed at UC-Berkeley, with the idea that any designer could use the instruction set to create chips, and also the software compilers that translate software applications from high-level programming languages in order to run on them. The project is now run by the RISC-V Foundation, whose membership includes a roster of universities, nonprofit organizations and top technology companies, including Google, IBM, Microsoft, NVIDIA and Oracle.

Martonosi's team discovered the problems when testing their new system to check memory operations across any computer architecture. The system, called TriCheck, allows designers and others interested in working with a design, to detect memory ordering errors before they become a problem. The name TriCheck derives from three general levels of computing: the high-level programs that create modern applications from web browsers to word processors; the instruction set architecture that functions as a basic language of the machine; and the underlying hardware implementation, a particular microprocessor designed to execute the instruction set.

"We call it TriCheck because it is making sure that the memory-ordering guarantees made by these three levels are in alignment," Martonosi said.

In a paper presented April 10 at the ACM International Conference on Architectural Support for Programming Languages and Operating Systems, the researchers describe the TriCheck system. The paper also details how TriCheck identified potential memory issues in high-performance hardware implementations of the RISC-V instruction set. (Similar errors were not uncovered in other implementations of the architecture.) The authors describe how they ran tests of the RISC-V instruction set using a high-level program written in the C programming language. On one particular RISC-V-compliant design, TriCheck found 144  errant programs out of 1,701 test programs.

The memory ordering challenge stems from the complexity of modern computers. As designers squeeze more performance out of computer systems, they rely on many concurrent operations sharing the same sections of computer memory. This parallel, shared-memory operation is extremely efficient, both for speed and power usage, but it puts a heavy demand on the computer's ability to interleave and properly order memory usage. If, for example, several processes are using the same section of memory, the computer needs to make sure that operations are applied to memory in the correct order, which may not always be the order in which they arrive from different concurrently running processors.

Subtle changes in any of the three computing levels — the machine level, the compiler and the high-level programming languages — can have unintended effects on the other layers. All three have to work together seamlessly to make sure memory errors don't crop up. One advantage of TriCheck is that it allows experts in one of these layers to avoid conflicts with the other two layers, even if they do not have expertise in them.

"If I write a program in C, it makes some assumptions about memory ordering," Martonosi said. "Subsequently, a different set of memory ordering rules are defined by the instruction-set architecture. We need to check that the high-level program's assumptions are accurately supported by the underlying instruction set and processor design."

However, the researchers said the TriCheck's greatest strength is its ability to give designers a broad view of memory usage. Although designers have long been interested in this perspective, previous attempts to comprehensively analyze memory operations have been too slow to be practical.

TriCheck is able to check memory ordering efficiently by using succinct formal specifications of memory ordering rules, known as axioms. For a given program, compiler, instruction set and hardware implementation, TriCheck can enumerate many ordering possibilities from these axioms, and then check for errors. By expressing the memory-ordering possibilities as connected graphs, TriCheck can identify potential errors by looking for cycles in the graphs. These checks can be done very efficiently on modern high-performance computers, and TriCheck's speed has allowed it to explore larger and more complex designs than prior work.

The TriCheck project culminates four years of work by Martonosi's group of developing checks across various layers of hardware, memory and software. A recent project, PipeCheck, was aimed at allowing the teams who were developing the physical microchip to alter their designs to avoid memory-ordering problems. Typically, chip designers focus detailed verification of the chip's correctness in the last stage of development. But problems can be expensive to fix that late in design. PipeCheck allows designers to check the memory usage much earlier in the design pipeline and to correct errors sooner at this cheaper stage.

"PipeCheck helps determine whether the central processing unit keeps the promises it makes about memory usage," Martonosi said.

Lustig worked on the PipeCheck and TriCheck projects and joined NVIDIA after receiving his doctorate in 2015. Now at NVIDIA, which makes processors that specialize in computer graphics, Lustig said he appreciates the ability to closely analyze designs for bugs.

"Tools like PipeCheck and TriCheck are extremely useful when building new architectures, particularly for designs that really try to push the envelope," Lustig said. He added that identifying bugs can be difficult, but even when they are uncovered, making sure that solutions don't cause problems in other areas of the system poses new challenges. "TriCheck puts all the pieces together by verifying the software, the compiler, the architecture and the microarchitecture in one single package."

In addition to Martonosi and Lustig, the paper's authors include: Caroline Trippel and Yatin Manerkar, of Princeton; and Michael Pellauer of NVIDIA. Support for the work was provided in part by the National Science Foundation and by CFAR, one of six centers of STARnet, a Semiconductor Research Corporation program sponsored by the Microelectronics Advanced Research Corporation and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency.

Martonosi said the goal for the TriCheck project is to stop bugs before they create problems for users.

"TriCheck is an important step in our overall goal of verifying correct memory orderings comprehensively across complex hardware and software systems," she said. "Given the increased reliance on computer systems everywhere — including finance, automobiles and industrial control systems — moving towards verifiably correct operation is important for their reliability and safety."
