I/O: The Mobile Web Gets a Lot Faster

At the Google IO conference last week, one of the things I found most interesting were the improvements now available in websites and the mobile Web in particular.

Richard Gingras, senior director of news and social products at Google, talked about how the company has a "symbiotic relationship with publishers," and how Google and publishers "both desire a rich and open ecosystem for media distribution."

Search is an important source of traffic for publishers. He noted that users search Google trillions of times a year, with more searches on mobile than on desktop. Mobile is different, with the average person checking their phone 150 times a day and spending 177 minutes on the device each day, numbers that seemed a bit terrifying to me. As a result, Google needed to rebuild search for the mobile world, with things like Google Now cards, a ranking system that takes into account whether sites are mobile friendly, and tools and features to help make search more useful on the mobile Web.

Chief among these efforts are "accelerated mobile pages" (AMP), which involves some changes to HTML5, CSS3, and JavaScript, to speed up how quickly pages load from the search engine. Gingras noted that 40 percent of viewers abandon a site that takes more than 3 seconds to load. To date, AMP pages includes 125 million documents from more than 640,000 domains.

Building on this, he talked about creating AMP "carousels" with content you can scroll through left and right, such as in images. This is launching first with recipes, but will expand to other categories. In this way, search results are moving from standard lists to "rich snippets" (including images and other parts of the page) to new rich cards, which are a lot more visual. See the image at the top for an example.

Other new features include real-time indexing, so that publishers don't have to wait for Google to index their sites, but instead will be able to use a new API to get their stories indexed. This is just about to enter a pilot and will be rolled out to more publishers over the next year. Gingras also pushed the Google Search Console, which he said was designed to let publishers optimize their search presence.

In a talk on the "state of the union" of the Mobile Web, Google's Rahul Roy-Chowdhury talked about how the Web is open and decentralized, and allows for easy discovery of content and the broadest reach, since it runs on every platform. He noted that Google introduced Chrome on mobile only 4 years ago, but that it now has more than 1 billion monthly mobile users.

He talked about the importance of pages that load and scroll quickly, and of AMP, which focuses on initial content appearing quickly. He focused primarily on progressive web apps, in which only a piece of a Web application is loaded into the browser, so it loads much faster and has a lot more functionality.

David Merrell of The Washington Post showed how this works. AMP certainly allows a page to load quickly within Chrome, but with the progressive Web app, you quickly get essentially the whole site in a format designed for mobile. This is in public testing now (and seems to work with Safari on iOS as well as on Android). From what I've seen it is a huge speed improvement.

Roy-Chowdhury said that 66 percent of ecommerce happens on the mobile Web, but conversions on mobile happen at a rate 66 percent lower than on the desktop, because completing the transaction is more difficult on a small screen with a tiny touchscreen keyboard. To solve this problem, he showed off a new credential manager API to allow for cross-device and cross-app sign-ins, and a new web payments API to enable one-tap payment within Web apps using a credit card or Android Pay.

Another new feature is enabling notifications from Web applications, not just native applications. New features enable push notifications to mobile and allow content to be stored offline; as an example, Air Berlin showed its site, with the boarding pass stored offline.

Roy-Chowdhury concluded by talking about the importance of all of this working on any browser on any platform, and keeping platforms open. "We're all in this together," he said.

During the show I talked with a number of developers who worked for publishers, and most were impressed with the concept of AMP and progressive web pages. Some saw it as an alternative to building dedicated applications, now that they can handle things such as notifications and offline content. While a number said that making their content work with Facebook's Instant Articles was a higher priority than making pages work with AMP or designing progressive web applications, almost everyone who makes a Web app was interested in making it faster and more responsive. These changes are likely to impact a huge number of sites over the next year or so.

A Blocks-Based Design Program Lets Kids Code Their Own 3-D Creations

Adam Green, an instructor at Einstein’s Workshop, shows 3D printers to students learning BlocksCAD, a free 3D-design software developed at the Workshop. Adam Green, an instructor at Einstein's Workshop, shows 3-D printers to students learning BlocksCAD, a free 3-D design software developed at the Workshop.

Chris Berdik

This story was produced by the Hechinger Report, a nonprofit, independent news organization focused on inequality and innovation in education.

On a recent Saturday at Einstein's Workshop, a makerspace outside Boston, boisterous kids were busy with Legos, mini motors and gears, magnetic tiles, pipe cleaners, posterboard, markers, and tape. In a side room, about a dozen elementary and middle school students were learning computer-aided design, or CAD, for 3-D printers. Their instructors shut the door but couldn't completely keep out the creative chaos. Nor did they want to.

Like all educators mixing high-tech with hands-on, they faced a familiar challenge—the freewheeling, playful problem-solving that comes naturally to kids using blocks or craft supplies isn't easily replicated with a computer. A few years ago, when the folks at Einstein's Workshop bought their first 3-D printer, the available CAD software seemed either too technical for young kids or too simplistic, with limited flexibility for faster learners or more advanced students.

"Being a community of DIY hackers, we decided to make our own software," said Solomon Menashi, BlocksCAD's project manager. They wanted something as intuitive as Legos, but with the power and precision of real computer modeling. The result was BlocksCAD, a free web-based program released in June that has spread to about 1,000 active users in schools, makerspaces, and fab labs worldwide.

With BlocksCAD, you create, combine and manipulate 3-D shapes by stacking "block" commands rather than by typing in precise coding syntax. For example, you can drag a block command for a sphere from the shapes menu into the workspace, where you can adjust its radius. Snap on a translate block to move the sphere along the X, Y, and Z axis, or add on a rotate block to spin it. Use a color block to change its hue. Hit the render button and the sphere appears within a maneuverable XYZ grid. Finished designs can be sent to a 3-D printer that will fabricate them layer by layer.

BlocksCAD benefits from students' growing familiarity with block-based computer programming languages, starting with Scratch, developed about a decade ago at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Millions of kids as young as kindergarten-age have used Scratch to learn the basics of coding and computational thinking, thanks to initiatives such as the Hour of Code. Another Scratch sibling popular with educators, called App Inventor, is used for programming mobile apps.

"When my students first opened up BlocksCAD, they said, oh, this is just like Hour of Code," said Courtney Bedzyk, one of three middle-school science teachers in Hudson, Ohio, whose students used BlocksCAD this spring to design amusement park rides for a unit on electricity, magnetism, gravity, and force diagrams. For Bedzyk, combining the exposure to 3-D printing with computer programming is an educational twofer.

"It's so relevant as far as where our society is going. And it makes them work their brains in new ways," she said. "With some of my lowest performing students, this was the first time I've seen that spark of engagement and motivation in their eyes all year."

According to Jennie Yoder, an instructor and the lead software developer at Einstein's Workshop, the goal was to have one CAD program that could grow with the skills of each student, typically starting around third grade, when kids have a grasp of basic math and measuring in three dimensions.

"They can start very simple, by just combining shapes, and then they can start making more complicated, mathematical designs," Yoder said, noting the more advanced command blocks for equations and "if this, then that" conditional logic.

Even among the CAD novices at Einstein's Workshop, there was plenty of variation. The instructor, Adam Green, led a tutorial in which students built a caterpillar with spheres side by side along the X axis. Some of the kids dutifully followed Green's instructions, while others jumped ahead.

"Can we change the Z in one to make it go up and down?" asked 9-year-old Mark Parr.

"We will in a second," answered Green, who then hooked together three long, colored sticks to give a quick a lesson in X, Y, Z coordinates, including the negative numbers along each axis.

A bit later, 11-year-old Caitlin Lian asked, "Can we 3-D–print a Rubik's cube?" as she fiddled with a Rubik's cube while waiting for her classmates to catch up in the caterpillar tutorial.

"Actually, we get that question a lot," Green said. "You could print the parts, but not a complete, working Rubik's cube."

For an ongoing study of how 3-D printing could be better used in schools, staff at the nonprofit Technical Education Research Centers test-drove BlocksCAD and several other 3-D design tools.

"I was really taken with BlocksCAD. It was just fun," said Lisa Miller, the TERC researcher co-leading the study. "I'd come into work and start designing little structures. Then, I'd look up and say, my God, four hours have passed!"

The BlocksCAD software includes several sample projects, complete with all the coding behind them, and there's a brief, how-to slideshow on the BlocksCAD website.

Adam Green points out the positive and negative quadrants along each axis while leading a 3D design tutorial in which students design their own chairs.Adam Green points out the positive and negative quadrants along each axis while leading a 3-D design tutorial in which students design their own chairs.

Chris Berdik

Einstein's Workshop also offers educators a four-hour training, which the teachers in Hudson completed in February even though their school did not yet have a 3-D printer. After designing their amusement-park rides, the Hudson students sent their files to INVENTORCloud, a program run by the nonprofit Advanced Methods in Innovation, which offers schools remote access to a suite of 3-D printers and other digitally controlled fabrication equipment.

"Teachers tend to be linear thinkers, as in, 'I'm going to give you steps for how to do something.' But when you're working with CAD you don't think that way," said Hudson's curriculum coordinator, Christina Wooley, who oversaw the training. "The kids figured that out perhaps faster than we did."

In contrast to the speed with which kids create in BlocksCAD, the 3-D printing process is glacial. At Einstein's Workshop, they like to keep designs to a scale that can be printed in 45 minutes, which Green explained as "about the size of a cupcake."

Still, the physical product is important, said Josh Gold, a middle-school math teacher on Hanscom Air Force Base in Bedford, Massachusetts, whose students used algebra in their BlocksCAD designs for a model space station. It's a great motivator, said Gold, "and if the student has made something tangible, and they bring it home to show it off, then maybe there'll be a conversation about math around the dinner table."

Up next for the BlocksCAD developers is creating CAD–infused lesson plans linked to specific topics and standards in math, computer science, physics and other academic subjects. "We want to make this useful and relevant for classroom teachers," said Menashi. "That's a front-burner item for us right now."

To me the game changer here is the web server. It gives you the ability to create your story from a desktop, laptop, tablet, or any device that can connect to the web. The apps, at least at this point, are iOS based. With the web, you can create your vision and everything will sync to the Spark apps.

When you go to the web page, as long as you have an Adobe account, the service and the apps are free (there is some Adobe branding on the output). You are prompted to create either a post, a page, or a video. The post options lets you create social media posts and graphics, great for announcements, invitations, and inspirational quotes to name just a few possibilities. You begin with some text and you can choose a theme, add a photo, add some filtering, change the font and more. Once you are done, you can save, share, and download as well as other options.

Spark Page

Spark Page

The next option is to create a page. A page is a web story. This is great for communicating with people, creating a photo journal, recapping an event, creating a catalog, building a portfolio, etc. Here you can build a one-page site (that page can be as long as you like) containing things like links, photos, videos, text, and a slideshow that glides down as you scroll down the page. The video is limited to web video, not cloud, nor can you upload any video, although you can use Spark Video.

Spark Video

Spark Video

Finally, the video option begins with some text and then gives you a number of options for the type of video you want to make: Promote an Idea, Tell What Happened, A Hero's Journey, Show and Tell, Personal Growth, Teach a Lesson, An Invitation, Make Up My Own, or, if you want, you can just Start from Scratch. Here you record your narration and add photos and text to slides. There is clip art available as well; a story board that will help you structure your video; a panel on the right that provides backgrounds you can use; and music available. You can also upload your own soundtrack.

The three areas described above correspond to the three mobile applications: Post, Page, and Video. They sync and let you capture photos and video to bring everything together. There seems to me some room for growth here in that more could be done with video and cloud integration, but I think that Adobe has made huge steps with the Web Service capabilities of Spark. For that reason, and the fact that it is free to use, I highly recommend Adobe Spark.

Software AG webMethods DevOps Edition announced for business design and continuous delivery

End-to-end digital business platform provider Software AG announced today the general availability of its new DevOps Edition for webMethods, a software suite and service for continuous development, testing integration and deployment. Built into the DevOps Edition is a set to tools to allow developers to write and launch apps with shorter lead times.

The webMethods Integration Platform is a pre-integrated software suite featuring Software AG's Enterprise Service Bus (ESB) design, which enables rapid integration of systems, services, devices, processes, business partners and data in order to streamline development and operations.

"Our Digital Business Platform is the fastest way to implement new business designs and continuous delivery of new designs requires that developers can quickly change these interfaces between different systems.," said Wolfram Jost, chief technology officer, Software AG. "webMethods DevOps Edition was built to provide developers and IT operations with better communication, collaboration and integration tools, taking into account the need for frequent iterations and interchanges."

Jost sees the tradition of developers creating monolithic applications for customers as falling by the wayside with the adoption of continuous integration and deployment, which makes up the bulk of DevOps automation practices. Now that developers need to work with rapid, incremental updates pushed out to customers on a daily—and sometimes hourly—basis, it's necessary to have a platform that supports that.

"The root of DevOps' success is in breaking activities into small, modular chunks," Jost added, commenting on the modern DevOps best practices. "For any new product that an organization launches, DevOps teams can approach the application with a modular approach, and have a clear plan on how to break down existing monolithic products in the same fashion."

webMethods DevOps Edition rich feature set for developers

The new webMethods for DevOps Edition enables an "unplugged" coding environment for application development, permitting frequent iterations without breaking pace. This is done by automating testing features letting developers develop and test apps without being connected to a network or a server.

Deveopers can also access Eclipse/Designer, common development tools, on local systems with all related plug-ins continuously available.

The platform is designed to mimic network connectivity with "simulation" functionality, so connected software acts as if it's part of a network even if it's not currently connected. This could have potential uses as part of producing software that needs to remain secure during testing and must not "leak" information onto networks outside of itself. It also would prevent accidental connection to production environments.

Finally, the new update adds the "Continuous Delivery" paradigm to Software AG's Digital Business Platform, making it more enticing for business with high-availability DevOps teams.

More information about Software AG's webMethods Integration Platform product is available at the company's website.

Digi-Key’s web tools entice new and existing designer markets

Having the ability to successfully reach out to the young, emerging design community, while maintaining the levels of service and product selection to its existing and older, established clientele remains a significant strength for Digi-Key Electronics, one of the world's largest web-based distributors of electronic components.

EP&T Magazine had the opportunity to catch up with senior personnel at Digi-Key during the Electronics Distribution Show (EDS) held in Las Vegas this spring.  Dave Doherty, president and chief operating officer boldly predicted a 6% increase in revenues for his company during a presentation to industry members at the firm's annual EDS breakfast. He did, however stress that the figure is somewhat skewed by global currency exchange rates, which includes Canada's sinking dollar.

Shipping more line items year over year

"In same currency sales, business looks great," Doherty says. "We like to peel it back and look at the underlying activity of reaching customers and we are shipping more (10%) line items year over year."

Doherty took the reins in his new role last summer, after long-time president and COO, Mark Larson joined founder Ron Stordahl in a board-level role as vice chairman, where he serves as a company advisor.

While the firm has experienced a slight reduction in its average order size during the first quarter of 2016, Doherty says he expects things to change for the better, as driven by the company's recent digital marketing initiatives. Ten months ago Digi-Key appointed Jim Ricciardelli as vice-president of digital business. The industry veteran combines his knowledge as a recent disty executive with Arrow Electronics and early web search engine pioneer Lycos Inc.

We-based tools expand Digi-Key's digital footprint

Expanding its overall digital footprint, Digi-Key has recently introduced new web-based tools, such as the maker.io site, targeted toward the maker professional. Doherty points out that Digi‐Key was started by a maker professional in founder Dr. Ronald Stordahl and has a long history of being a destination for these entrepreneurial engineers.

"The Maker.io site helps them take their ideas from concept to product," Doherty says. "Our mission is to enable the creativity of our customer. We do that by offering such tools."

Digi-Key also recently introduced Scheme-it, an online schematic and diagramming tool that allows anyone to design and share electronic circuit diagrams. The tool includes a comprehensive electronic symbol library and an integrated Digi-Key component catalog that allows for a wide range of circuit designs. Additionally, a built-in bill of materials manager is provided to keep track of parts used in a design. Once a schematic drawing is complete, users can export it to an image file or share it via email with others. Scheme-it works natively in all major web browsers without requiring the use of any plugins.

scheme-it.com acts as a virtual 'electronic' napkin, or starter tool

"For a segment of our customer base, this rudimentary simulation tool (scheme-it) acts as a virtual 'electronic' napkin, or starter tool, where early design ideas and concepts are often born," Doherty says. "I have a son in university studying electrical engineering and his professor suggested to the class that they go to Digi-Key and download scheme-it while pursuing a specific design project."

Digi-Key also offers its customers PartSim, a free and easy to use circuit simulator that runs in your web browser, as well as PCBWeb, a free CAD application for designing and manufacturing electronics hardware.

"It's exciting for us because our customers are engaging with us even before laying parts on the board," states Doherty. "The importance of user-familiarity with website is paramount. Our customers know how to navigate it and they know where to find things quickly and efficiently."

Many students and members of the maker community love Digi-Key

Prior to joining the Digi-Key team, Ricciardelli says he was under the impression that the disty's customer base was represented by an older, established and loyal following. While that part is true, he was amazed at how many students and members of the maker community love Digi-Key.

"They use us to help them in the design process, because we are more than just a website. We are an engineering tool, that they can use to actually select parts," Ricciardelli says. "If these customers are not ready to start at the component level – then they are going to start at the board or kit level. We have that solution for them."

Ricciardelli understands that the availability of very low cost modular hardware tools combined with simple-to-use free software development environments has led to an explosion in the number of makers and developers. As a result, Maker.io is platform (Arduino, BeagleBone, Raspberry Pi, Photon, etc.), post, and project based. Beyond the roadmap, maker professionals as community members can submit projects either publicly or privately. This collaborative and project-based approach will help designers better understand the phases along the map.

Referring to the maker market as a real 'movement', Ricciardelli says one of its 'rock stars' Limor Fried, founder of the electronics and tutorial company, Adafruit, is a fan and user of Digi-Key and its online catalog.

"We know who these people are and they know who we are. We must continue to evolve our tools and inventory to make sure they keep coming to stay in love with us," Ricciardelli adds.

At the end of the day, both Doherty and Ricciardelli are confident that Digi-Key will continue its evolution towards maintaining existing ties and ingratiate emerging design communities.

"When the market starts to swing and we get the wind at our back and increase average order sizes – all these efforts get brought to bear," Doherty says.

5 Tips for Designing a Great Web Storefront

Five years ago, companies built their online shopping carts with the desktop experience in mind. To meet the needs of smartphone and tablet shoppers, these businesses made minor adjustments or they purchased mobile storefront software that was completely different experientially as compared to the e-commerce experience.

Today, companies that are designing their first e-commerce websites, or completely revamping old websites, must design the mobile experience first and then adjust the desktop experience as needed. "Every element, every piece of content, must be functional on mobile," said Jimmy Rodriguez, Chief Operating Officer (COO) at 3dcart. "If you're starting from scratch, you design for mobile. With responsive design, you can build the website to start on mobile and then bring it to the desktop."

3dcart, which provides e-commerce software to more than 17,000 customers worldwide, has logged a radical shift in how people shop online. Five years ago, only 5 percent of people were browsing 3dcart websites on smartphones and tablets. Today, that number is 60 percent (including tablets).

To help you design your e-commerce storefront for both mobile and desktop users, Rodriguez recommends that businesses incorporate the following design elements into their storefronts. However, before making any wholesale changes, Rodriguez cautions readers to A/B test features on specific product pages rather than plugging new features onto the entire website.

    1. Sticky Header Navigation We've all been there. We've scrolled down to the bottom of a product page to read user reviews or to read product details, and now we're ready to leave the page to get back to the menu to continue our shopping journey. Unfortunately, in order to get back to the menu, we've typically had to click the "Page Up" button on our desktop keyboards or tap at the top of the screen on our mobile devices.

With Sticky Headers, as you scroll down, the menu resizes and adjusts. The menu follows you along your journey to keep the navigation on the screen should you need to quickly jump pages. You can see this in effect on Bose.com. Despite being midway through the page, I'm still able to access the page's main navigation without having to head back to the top of the screen.

    2. Hamburger Menus Although Hamburger Menus sound like a feature best-suited for fast food restaurants, they are quickly becoming a must-have for companies that do a lot of business on mobile devices. You've seen them before: Hamburger Menus have become the standard mobile icon for mobile navigation and menus.

They feature three horizontal lines that, when pressed, offer a drop-down menu of a website's navigation. They are particularly useful on mobile devices where screen real estate is at a premium. But we're starting to see them on desktop websites as well, so consumers have a similar experience on company websites regardless of the device they're using.

"A lot of people see Hamburger Menus and they know what it means, but they don't know it's basically the new standard," Rodriguez said. "Mobile visitors have learned the meaning of this symbol and websites should embrace it as a standard for mobile navigation."

You can see a Hamburger Menu on the upper-right hand corner of Target.com and on Target's mobile website. You can also see it pictured below.

    3. Parallax Scrolling Less of a functionality feature and more of a way to improve your website's aesthetics, Parallax Scrolling takes advantage of big banners full of high-resolution imagery to add an artistic flair to your website. By taking advantage of large, full-width images, you can create a displacement effect between your website's background image and the image that's directly in front of your consumer. As you can see in the image below from RemmilLondon.com, as you scroll down the page, the website's background images changes. However, the change occurs subtly as the background and foreground images blend into one another. The screengrab below shows the website right at the moment when the background image changes from purple to pink. 4. Infinite Scrolling Infinite Scrolling sounds more like a torture technique than it does an e-commerce feature. However, this nifty tool lets your users continually view new products without having to click into and load a new page. Here's how it works: When you scroll down to the bottom of an e-commerce page, the page automatically loads more items at the bottom of the page. They're still catalogued as pages on the backend but the visitor doesn't know that.

You can see a similar feature on UnderArmour.com. Unfortunately, Under Armour requires you to click the "Load More" button to see additional content. Some websites are equipped with an auto-open mechanism that will show you more content without requiring a click.

    5. A Floating "Add to Cart" Button  Similar to the Sticky Navigation tool, floating "Add to Cart" buttons allow your consumers to add products to their shopping cart regardless of where they are on the product page. Previously, users would scroll down to user reviews, product details, and other lower-page elements, and, in order to add the product to their cart, they'd have to scroll back to the top of the page. Now, companies such as Diesel.com let you see the product's price, quantity, color options, and image as well as the "Add to Cart" button, regardless of where you are on the product page.

30 hottest design resources for creativity and productivity

Designers are extremely busy people. Fact.

Not only do they have to make time to find inspiration for their next project, manage feedback, attend meetings, and communicate with their clients, they also have to find the time to actually sit down and do the work.

    So. Much. Tech.

Some of the biggest names in tech are coming to TNW Conference in Amsterdam this May.

Let's not forget the time and effort they have to put into mocking up an idea, creating a visual for sharing, or keeping abreast of modern design trends. The role of a designer is so much more than just 'coloring in'.

To ease the workload of time-poor designers, we've compiled a comprehensive list of the best software, apps, tools, skills, websites, and resources that no designer can live without.

Each of these tools has been carefully selected for its ability to help you streamline your work, find inspiration easily, show off your amazing design skills, and make collaboration easier.

We've broken the guide down into the 10 key areas so you can instantly find what you're looking for — you're busy people after all.

Check it out and feel free to let us know if we've missed any off the list.

    Hardware

    design, laptop, slack, website

If you're serious about design, there are some essential pieces of kit you will need. We have listed the top three pieces of hardware for designers below.

Strictly speaking, now that most design software is available on both PC and Mac, it doesn't particularly matter which platform you choose. However, the Mac's pedigree, its powerful and intuitive OS, and its built-in support for design peripherals make it the overwhelming favorite for design professionals.

Did we mention they also look great in any creative workspace?

Your choice of desktop (iMac) or laptop (MacBook Pro & MacBook Air) will obviously depend on whether you will be travelling a lot, or indeed whether you like to work from home or in coffee shops. If you prefer to be flexible, we would always recommend the MacBook.

You may not always want to use your own photography in your design work, but it's definitely worthwhile having a good DSLR camera on hand so you can easily document ideas and capture images to use for textures, backgrounds and more.

One of the most widely used DSLR cameras is the Canon EOS 1200D, predominantly for its relatively low cost and its ability to deliver 18MP images.

With all this technology available, you still can't beat good old fashioned pen and paper to brainstorm ideas and concepts. So why not do it in style and treat yourself to a decent sketchbook from Moleskine or Field Notes?

Keep it in your bag so you can quickly jot down ideas wherever you are.

    Research tools

    startuptools

Now that we've taken a look at some fantastic pieces of hardware, you'll need to get your creative juices flowing.

Here are some of the best resources available that will help you to get inspired.

Dribbble is billed as "show and tell for designers".

In a nutshell, it is the premier resource for discovering and connecting with designers around the globe. Designers can upload images and GIFs (or "shots" as they are referred to on Dribbble) and other users can ask questions, provide feedback, and debate a designer's visual choices.

  • Computer Arts subscription
  • Ever since its inaugural issue back in 1995, Computer Arts has been the go-to magazine for anyone into graphic design. Each and every issue is jam-packed with advice, opinion, recent projects and an abundance of inspiration, making it an invaluable resource for any creative professional.

If that wasn't enough, you can also get your fill of Computer Arts Magazine in print, a fully-interactive iPad edition or both.

Niice is a fantastic tool for gathering ideas and expressing your ideas faster.

Its highly intuitive drag and drop interface allows you to create mood boards in a matter of minutes. You also have access to a private personal space where you can collect images and inspiration without worrying about them showing up in public searches.

    Layout tools

    layoutsample2

Unfortunately, no one has yet to develop a tool that will design a layout for you. However, there are some tools that can help make the process easier.

One of the most common challenges for any web design project is determining accurate ratios for font sizes. This is where Modularscale comes into its own.

The app helps you to decide on accurate ratios for your font sizes, as well as providing CSS font size codes for when you have to copy and paste into a stylesheet.

Online grid generators are extremely handy for custom responsive HTML/CSS templates and Responsify is arguably the best of the bunch. Key features include the ability to generate your own grid, or even use these grids as a reference so you can create your own from scratch.

You can also use Responsify as a great visualisation tool to better understand the use of white space between columns and page content.

Although not necessarily a new innovation in the world of design (it is almost 2,400 years old after all), the golden ratio is found almost everywhere in nature and it applies to design composition as well. It states that "two elements are in perfect harmony when measured to the ratio of 1:1.618".

Obviously, you don't need to achieve this ratio for every single relationship in your design work, but understanding it's value as a timeless design fundamental is certainly worthwhile.

This handy calculator should help you to calculate and scale the golden ratio for any workspace.

    Branding tools

    branding

A logo is a visual representation of what your company stands for and therefore acts as the "face" of your business. This makes them a fantastic way of promoting your brand both on- and off-line, and a fantastic way of standing out from your competition. Unfortunately, getting them right can be tricky.

If you're struggling with your branding, we've compiled a list of high quality logo creation tools to help you create your brand.

Spaces is a fantastically simple to use tool for creating striking logos in a matter of minutes. All you need to do is input your company name and use a few keywords to describe what it does, and Spaces will automatically generate hundreds of relevant logos.

You also have the option to make minor alterations such as colors and typography to create a design that truly reflects your brand.

Another powerful logo creation tool is GraphicSprings. In fact, it's probably the most powerful on our list, which is mainly down to the sheer number of customisations and alterations you can make.

One of the most useful features is the option to categorise possible logos based on your business type, such as food and drink, sports and abstract.

If that wasn't enough, you can also hire one of GraphicSprings' in-house designers to create an entirely custom logo for you.

Although we have included a few handy tools for logo creation in this section, most designers would argue that the most important tool a designer could use to create a logo would be pencil and paper. This is because your idea has to come from an initial thought process, which is then roughed out using a pencil and paper.

Unfortunately, going straight to the computer can remove this critical thought process. Once you have your rough idea, you can then use software to fully flesh out your logo designs.

    Typography tools

    typography design typeface

Typography is one of the most challenging yet rewarding parts of any design process. Not only do you have to choose a suitable typeface, you also need to decide on appropriate line spacing, height, point size and so much more.

Getting your typography right will make your design work more powerful, more readable, and generally much more effective.

If you're still not convinced by the power of typography, a recent study revealed that people are significantly more likely to agree with statements that are written in Baskerville than in Comic Sans or Helvetica.

Typewolf was launched in 2013 as a response to a general "lack of good resources for choosing fonts for design projects".

Everything about Typewolf has been meticulously approached from a designer's perspective, most notably the ability to see how real type performs on actual websites as opposed to endless lines of "lorem ipsum".

Typekit is a subscription-based font service that curates thousands of fonts from a range of high-quality foundry partners into one library. This makes it perfect for simple browsing, use in presentations or on the web.

It's an endless source of typographic inspiration.

Typecast is a tool for designers that provides accurate and standards-based typography on the web. You have over 23,000 web fonts at your disposal, allowing you to combine and compare looks side-by-side.

You can also expand your type pairs into fully scaled, web-ready, kerned and colorized stacks of real content thanks to effortlessly simple visual controls.

    Color scheme tools

    color wheel

In the highly unlikely event that you have carved yourself a niche in creating nothing other than monochrome designs, at some point in your design life you will need to work with color.

Thankfully, we've gathered together some fantastic tools to help you perfect your color choices.

Although not the most glamorous of names, the Mudcube Color Sphere is an extremely useful color resource tool for designers. It's allows you to build up a color scheme from one chosen shade, while also providing you with the hex numbers for each color.

Pictaculous is a fantastic tool from the makers of MailChimp. It allows you to upload any image and Pictaculous will automatically generate a color scheme from the colors within the picture.

COLOURlovers acts less like a color selection tool, and more like a Pinterest board for color. It's a community designed solely for the sharing and appreciation of colors, palettes and patterns.

It's a superb source of color and palette inspiration.

    Photography tools

VSCO Cam is both a powerful photo-editing app and a way of connecting with amazing photographers from around the world.

It comes with a range of great performance features, including a plethora of pre-set filters and multiple high resolution imports. It'll also show you before and after comparisons of your photos so you can show how you built up your edits.

PicLab HD from MuseWorks is a nifty little app that enables you to quickly and easily layer text over your photos using attractive typefaces. All you need to do is choose an existing photo from your library or take a new photo, then work your magic.

Although at face value the app seems pretty straightforward, there are actually a wide range of powerful features under the hood. You have a range of fonts at your disposal, as well as complete control over positioning, size, opacity and color.

If that wasn't enough, you can also layer illustrations and other design elements on top of your image.

PicMonkey is a really useful tool for sprucing up your blog post images without the need for Photoshop.

PicMonkey lets you intuitively add borders, text, additional graphics, and re-color your images without the need to download other software.

    Illustration tools

    sketch, illustrate

The iPad can be a fantastic design tool to have at your disposal, especially if you also have a good stylus. You can sketch out ideas while on the move, or create a piece from start to finish.

Even better, there are a range of powerful apps that can help designers make the most out of their tablet. Here, we've highlighted the ones that are definitely worth downloading.

Paper is a stunningly designed sketchbook app that is perfect for sketching up designs and doodling on the move. Utilizing something called an "expressive ink engine" – which basically means that even when you're using your finger to draw in the app – it reacts to your movements so the lines generated are reflective of a more natural sketching experience.

You can also send pages from the Paper app directly via email, or even publish them straight to Facebook, Twitter, or Tumblr.

One of the main benefits of the Astropad Graphics Tablet is that it works as both an iPad app and a corresponding Mac app, effectively turning your iPad into a graphics tablet.

This nifty feature allows you to use your iPad to draw directly into Photoshop or any of the other design applications on your Mac.

Adobe Illustrator Draw gives you the ability to draw vector illustrations on your phone or tablet — but that's just the tip of the iceberg!

There's also a wide range of other tools to make your job even easier. You will also be able to draw perfect lines and curves, incorporate images from multiple sources and enjoy a 50-level undo and redo feature.

    Presentation tools

    presentations

You might not think it but your presentation skills are as important as your design skills. In fact, a sloppy presentation of your design project could mean rejection.

Thankfully, there is a wide range of presentation tools that will help to avoid "death by PowerPoint" and allow you to show your work at its best.

Prezi is an extremely innovative online presentation tool, which lets you incorporate videos, images and text, and animate them using a wide range of effects. It also allows you to run your presentations as executable files, as well as supporting all the main desktop and mobile platforms.

Even better, the final presentations can be shared directly from the app across all major social networks.

Although not a fully-fledged presentation-creation tool, PlaceIt is extremely useful for showing lifestyle images of your designs in action.

Simply upload your designs and they will be placed directly into Creative Commons-enabled stock photo templates, bringing your work to life.

This free tool is an all-in-one application for creating dazzling presentations using a range of intuitive drag-and-drop options.

If you're running low on creativity, there are also a number of beautiful presentation templates that you can tinker with and adapt to your heart's content.

One of its key features is its speed and flexibility, as well as the ability to access your presentations anywhere on any device.

    Working environment

    watch clock desk

It goes without saying that the spaces you occupy help to shape who you are and how you behave. This can also have a knock-on effect on your creativity and productivity.

As a designer, you will invariably spend years working in the same room, or indeed at the same desk. Therefore, it makes sense to create a workspace that is conducive to your requirements.

Pulling an all-nighter to meet a tight deadline is a rite of passage for a designer. On top of that, the demand for designers to work long hours in general means that you will be spending a lot of time sat in your chair.

This means it's important that you have the right one.

For the crème de la crème of seating options, go for the Herman Miller Aeron chair, which offers ergonomic comfort and adapts naturally to your body and seating position. It's also pretty darn stylish.

A word of warning: Some models cost over $1,300.

Even if you have a good chair, sitting down all day can be pretty bad. However, no one wants to be standing up all day either, despite the current chatter about standing desks.

Why not have the best of both worlds and invest in an adjustable desk?

The Varidesk Pro sits on top of your existing desk, which you can then lift up to a standing position in a few steps. When you want to return back to a seating position, simply reverse the process and you can sit in your seat again. The slightly high price point is nothing when you compare it to the health benefits.

Your back and your feet will thank you!

  • A good pair of headphones
  • A pair of over-ear headphones can be seen as the modern-day version of the thinking cap. They allow you to achieve zen-like focus, making them ideal for your commute or buckling down at your desk.

For the ultimate in focus, the Master & Dynamic MH40 over-ear headphones are designed to cancel out each and every noisy work distraction.

They're also way too cool to leave in your bag – give them pride of place on your desk or wherever else you find your inspiration.

New tools to look out for

    discover, search

A recent survey into the popularity of design tools showed that Photoshop is slowly losing its popularity among designers. This suggests that designers will always be open to new tools, providing they make the design process easier.

We've highlighted three trending design tools you should try in 2016.

Ceros is a new tool for content creation that is perfect for designers and marketers alike.

Using this tool, you will be able to create a range of engaging interactive content, including the likes of magazines, microsites, infographics, eBooks, banners, and much more.

Although not necessarily a new tool – UXPin is currently used by thousands of designers around the globe.

UXPin recently announced they were working on a complete overhaul of their collaborative wireframe and prototype tool, which looks very promising indeed.

Thankfully, you can sign up to the waiting list now to get notified about the release.

Fuse is an intuitive UX tool suite for both app developers and designers.

One of Fuse's key features is the ability to create and update the look and feel of native apps in real-time on multiple devices at the same time. The downside is that it's only currently available for Windows and OS X users.

    So there you have it.

Hopefully this guide has pointed you in the direction of a few more design tools that can help you streamline your work, find inspiration more easily, show off your amazing design skills, and make collaboration easier.
