Freeway Express 6.1.2 review: Web design program is free, outdated, frustrating

Unlike most Mac web design programs, Freeway Express costs nothing. You get only slightly more than what you pay for. This bargain edition of a more powerful—and expensive—website creation tool has its good points. But they're mired beneath a poorly designed interface, and the websites you create seem a half-decade or more behind the times.

(Apple's Mac App Store has a nearly three-year-old version of Freeway Express. The current version is available on Softpress' website.)

Freeway Express 6.1.2

Freeway Express's drag-and-drop ease belies the out-of-date code it creates.

Under construction—expect delays

In the early days of the web, designers used HTML tables as a framework for laying out sites. It was a kludgy workaround for a problem HTML hadn't yet solved, but it got the job done. In 1998, the earliest versions of CSS layout arrived, providing a cleaner, easier way to lay out page elements. Though it's hard to say exactly how long CSS has been the standard, "at least a half-decade" is an incredibly safe bet.

I explain this so you'll fully understand when I tell you that Freeway Express uses table-based layouts. It doesn't even include an option for CSS layout. It relies on standard, space-hogging JavaScript for interactivity, rather than CSS or the sleeker and more versatile jQuery. And except for a few odd elements here and there, it doesn't fully support the HTML5 or CSS3 standards on which most modern sites are built. It also lacks support for the responsive design technology that lets sites adjust their designs to fit various devices' screen sizes.

Freeway Express does an admittedly clever job of hiding these shortcomings at first. It lets you drag and drop elements onto your pages anywhere you want, sized however you prefer. It doesn't actually generate the underlying HTML code until you preview your site. This might actually be a clever solution to avoid cluttering up clean code with layers of revisions, if that code were up to modern standards. As it is, the separation merely makes it harder for you to easily see how your site will look as you edit it. Too often, you just get empty boxes with labels on them.

Freeway Express 6.1.2

Once you know what you're doing, you can create impressive results like this photo gallery—but it'll require patience.

Slow next 50 miles—steep hills

Once you figure out how to use Freeway Express, you can actually accomplish some pretty nifty tricks. Though I wasn't impressed with Freeway's paltry, unappealing roster of standard fonts, I did appreciate its ability to create fully editable graphical text elements using any of my system fonts. Configuring the built-in, no-frills FTP to upload my files required only minimal fiddling with the settings. I also built a reasonably slick CSS dropdown menu, and followed the exhaustive tutorial in the instruction manual to construct an interactive photo gallery, complete with selectable thumbnails that displayed a larger image.

Unfortunately, many of the more complex tasks I mentioned prove woefully unintuitive, thanks to an interface that hides a lot of key commands in menus, displays different options in different places without obvious clues to help you understand those distinctions, and demands you follow steps that seem more like programming workarounds than logical procedures.

To make that CSS menu I mentioned, I couldn't just select the "CSS Menu" action—one of Freeway Express's army of interactive or specialized page elements, which can be expanded with downloads from the program's online repository—and then build how I wanted it to look and where I wanted each link to go, as I could in other programs I've tested.

Instead, I had to create a text box, use poorly marked arrow buttons to indent some elements of the text into a bullet-pointed list, apply links to each item via a command hidden in the program's menus, and apply the CSS Menu action to that list, and then style the menu's appearance in one of the many obtrusive floating palettes that always seemed to hover over whatever part of the screen I needed to see. I would've had no idea how to do any of that if I hadn't consulted Freeway Express's clearly written, numbingly thorough help manual.

Freeway Express 6.1.2

Even on a large monitor, Freeway Express's phalanx of palettes seem to crowd out what you're working on.

Building that interactive photo gallery proved similarly obtuse, as I jumped back and forth between multiple Inspector tabs for multiple Actions applied to various stacks of elements. It still worked better than Freeway Express's actual photo gallery action, which just manifested a big, blank box. I'm sure reading the manual would have clued me in – but I've tested plenty of other programs whose design made it obvious how to set up a gallery without having to lunge for the help files.

Toll road ahead—lanes divide

I have no doubt that if I toughed out the learning curve, I'd find myself able to accomplish even more impressive feats with Freeway Express. The sheer number of built-in actions, not to mention the downloadable add-ons, suggest a program with more depth and breadth than many others I've tested in the past few months. But expending that effort hardly seems worthwhile if it only yields sites built on creaky, cluttered, dust-covered code.

Freeway Express seems outdated by design, since creators Softpress also offer the much more modern Freeway Pro. This shiny new version supports HTML5, CSS positioning, responsive design, and more. I didn't evaluate Freeway Pro, but its feature set looks legitimately impressive.

However, Freeway Pro still appears saddled with much of Express's same baffling look and feel. And at $150, it's nearly twice as expensive as any other Mac web design program I've evaluated, including several that provide a respectable portion of its abilities within far friendlier, more intuitive interfaces.

Freeway Express 6.1.2

Freeway Express separates its editing and preview modes, so that what you work on doesn't always closely resemble the finished product.

Bottom line

Freeway Express feels like a bumpy stretch of dead-end road. The Pro version's abundant features might be worthwhile for patient users with money to burn, but I can't recommend Express to even the most cash-strapped designers. Learning to write code in a text editor matches Freeway Express's zero-dollar price tag, probably requires no more of a time commitment, and will produce better results in the end.

InduSoft releases InduSoft Web Studio v8.0

Capable, now and in the future, of meeting the increased demands and functionality of the Internet of Things, Industry 4.0 and embedded devices.

By Dave Perkon, technical editor

Dave Perkon headshot onlineDave Perkon is technical editor for Control Design. He has engineered and managed automation projects for Fortune 500 companies in the medical, automotive, semiconductor, defense and solar industries.

"Regardless of the device, it must exchange data with other devices through the Internet and through the cloud if necessary," says Fabio Terezinho, director of consulting services, InduSoft at Schneider Electric Software. "IT determines the particular Internet of Things (IoT) approach and decides whether the cloud is needed or not, and whether the network is in plant, public or private domain. InduSoft is open for device integration and is ready to drive on any road, as we are connecting machines together, to the Internet and to the cloud."

InduSoft is releasing InduSoft Web Studio v8.0, the latest version of its award-winning software, comments Terezinho. "InduSoft Web Studio v8.0 continues our commitment to innovation and openness," he says. "In addition to HMI, SCADA and embedded instrumentation solutions, this new version offers unique, enhanced IoT and interface capabilities for use on a variety of smartphones and tablets, as well as unparalleled revision control and application lifecycle management."

InduSoft began as a privately held company in 1997 and has been making InduSoft Web Studio, for over 15 years. InduSoft was acquired by Invensys in 2013, and then again by Schneider Electric in 2014. It has now grown to be a part of Schneider Electric Software and soon a segment of Aveva, when finalized.

Despite all the changes in the parent company, InduSoft has continued to develop and evolve InduSoft Web Studio, CEView, EmbeddedView, and now IoTView, and has a clear roadmap for the future.

New devices welcome

InduSoft aims to offer a platform-agnostic HMI/SCADA solution that is highly flexible and able to support emerging technology trends.

"The number of Internet-connected devices in the world is increasing, and InduSoft Web Studio is ready to connect these devices with the portability and small footprint required for deployment on any platform and the same user-friendly development environment as previous versions," comments Terezinho. "There is a growing number of connected devices, and this new demographic doesn't always run Windows. InduSoft will continue to support these new classes of devices with its HMI software, reducing custom coding and development time."

InduSoft Web Studio is a complete solution, with no need to purchase add-ons for necessary functionality, notes Terezinho. "It scales easily, and applications can be developed quickly for deployment on almost any device," he explains. "InduSoft was the first HMI/SCADA solution for Windows CE devices and is now the first software package with a dedicated version for IoT and Industry 4.0 applications. Because InduSoft Web Studio is platform-agnostic, it's easy to connect to a huge variety of disparate devices with native communication drivers."

The new runtime, IoTView in particular, was designed with a very small footprint capable of running on most devices designed for the Internet of Things, says Terezinho. "It offers a core runtime for some Linux and VXWorks operating systems," adds Terezinho.

Other enhancements

InduSoft Web Studio also offers improved functionality for mobile access, better security and improved collaboration with integration to Microsoft's Team Foundation Server, states Terezinho. "Improvements to the collaboration server add-on and its integration with Team Foundation Server make it even easier for multiple engineers to work on the same InduSoft Web Studio project," he explains.InduSoft Web Studio 8.0 incorporates new enhancements. The software provides new options for native tag integration, in addition to the more than 240 drivers already included with the software.

"The easy configuration options for mobile and remote HMI and SCADA solutions have been improved with our new multiple screen support feature," notes Terezinho. "The ability to simultaneously open multiple screens on the Studio Mobile Access (SMA) thin client solution is part of this release. Multiple screens such as screen groups, pop-ups and dialogs can be opened on thin client stations using any HTML5-compatible Web browser. Not only is this an important feature for new applications, it also allows visualization of multiple screens from existing applications on SMA thin clients, with no additional screen creation needed," continues Terezinho.

This InduSoft Web Studio v8.0 release is a natural evolution of the product's lifecycle, comments Terezinho. "Using agile program development methods, InduSoft has been releasing minor and major enhancements to our software since v7.0," he says. "This new release is just the starting point for future enhancements."

InduSoft was the first HMI/SCADA solution for Windows CE devices and is now the first software package with a dedicated version for the Internet of Things and Industry 4.0 applications."

EverWeb 1.8.2 review: Well-crafted web design app knows its limits and often surpasses them

No single Mac web design app offers the ideal blend of power and accessibility. But Rage Software's EverWeb comes closer than most, helping you build attractive, useful sites with minimal hassle.

A web-design app that plays nice

Every element of EverWeb's simple interface is easily in reach when you need it, and out of your way when you don't. The central layout window's surrounded by your site structure on the left, a toolbar along the bottom of the screen, and a multi-tabbed Inspector pane for adjusting individual elements on the right.

EverWeb

EverWeb's clean, logical interface puts everything right where you need it.

EverWeb includes numerous modern, fully editable templates, each with multiple page types and a mobile version. You can also build sites from scratch with a pleasantly powerful layout engine—though I did sometimes wish for adjustable guides or a grid to keep my layouts tidy. I used the Master Pages feature to create a common header and (after some initial confusion and a trip to the help files) footer for every page on my site.

EverWeb supports full-width design elements, too, but it's tough to center-align them with other objects. The program seems to orient itself by the center of your monitor, not its own window, so elements get shifted too far to one side.

Still, I felt like EverWeb helped me far more than it fought me. Plentiful, well-made tutorial videos make its modest learning curve even gentler, with many more answers waiting in its searchable online knowledgebase.

Simple looks, surprising depth

EverWeb lacks ultra-precise CSS styling. You can apply uniform borders, padding, and drop shadows, and its CSS-based shapes offer adjustable color settings for different rollover states—useful for making buttons. But you can't fine-tune styles for individual sides of an object, create and manage custom CSS classes, or adjust sitewide styles beyond default link and shape colors.

EverWeb doesn't build in blog support, though a help video promises that feature in future versions. And like many of its rivals, EverWeb doesn't do HTML tables or bullet-pointed lists, unless you want to write that code yourself.

Still, the drag-and-drop widgets EverWeb does offer are impressively powerful and intuitive. In seconds, I assembled a decent-looking photo gallery and an attractive image slider, dropped in a Google map, built a contact form, and embedded HTML5 audio and YouTube video to a test page. All worked perfectly when viewed in my browser.

EverWeb

While it doesn't offer precise CSS styling, EverWeb's options are still good enough to make a slick, modern-looking site.

EverWeb's CSS menu widget works very well—up to a point. It updates automatically based on your site's structure, and you can easily exclude pages from it if you don't want them listed. With little effort, you can adjust each your menu's look, spacing, and rollover behavior. But the menu's designed to work best horizontally; you can squeeze the options into a vertical column, but any drop-down submenus will appear awkwardly on top of the successive links. There's also no way to shrink the menu down to a space-saving icon for mobile pages.

I was especially impressed by the PayPal widget, which hooks smartly into that service's infrastructure to create moderately full-featured online stores. Few rival programs offer any e-commerce option this powerful, and the few that do charge extra for it.

You'll find even more widgets hosted on or linked from EverWeb's site. Many are free, while others come in $6 packs grouped by type and capabilities.

EverWeb also wins kudos for superbly simple asset management. You can drag images, PDFs, ebooks, and other files directly into your asset library, then easily call upon them for backgrounds or links. When you're ready to take your site live, EverWeb will upload it via FTP, export the files to be uploaded elsewhere, or send it to EverWeb's own integrated hosting service (whose annual cost isn't included in the basic purchase price).

EverWeb

An impressive selection of readymade widgets, each easily customized, enable you to enhance your site with photo galleries, image sliders, and more.

We can work it out

Even when it hits its limits, EverWeb often tries admirably to offer you a way around them. The results aren't spectacular, but they work well enough.

For example, there's no built-in roster of web-safe fonts to use, and no simple way to add your own. But EverWeb's smart enough to add necessary code enabling any Google Fonts you've already installed on your computer. (I did notice that EverWeb displayed Google Fonts oddly, pushing them farther down from the top of their text boxes than the browser did. But once you know that quirk, you can adjust your design accordingly.)

The program's help site also links to step-by-step instructions for using EverWeb's assets library and custom header and footer code to slip third-party web fonts into your design—a little extra work, but still more than most rivals can offer.

And while EverWeb doesn't offer adjustable breakpoints or other responsive design features, it does provide the aforementioned mobile-ready templates, plus easy options to redirect a page to a mobile counterpart.

You'll have to create extra pages—consuming extra server space and bandwidth—to support mobile users. And EverWeb assumes your site's at the top of your server's directory structure. If it's buried a few folders deep instead, the redirect feature breaks, and you'll have to manually specify the full address of each mobile page, rather than just picking its name from a list.

This rudimentary support's still better than none. Compared to my experiences trying to set up responsive designs in other apps, I found it a lot easier and less aggravating to just build dedicated mobile pages here.

EverWeb

As you design, bear in mind that some fonts might not display quite the same in your browser as they do in EverWeb.

It took me about 12 hours total to build both desktop and mobile versions of a sample site. EverWeb's resulting code wasn't the cleanest, duplicating CSS stylesheets and JavaScript code on every page in ways that increased file sizes and load times. But EverWeb's creators say version 1.9 will add svelter, smarter coding.

Bottom line

EverWeb doesn't do everything perfectly. But it does enough things well, and does them in such a considerate, user-friendly way, to make it one of my favorite web apps among those I've tested. Pro designers will want a program with more oomph, and complete novices have even simpler alternatives that'll still yield good results. Everyone in between should definitely give EverWeb a try.

Visually impaired deprived of access to web

Kathmandu, August 24

Visually impaired people have a hard time fetching information from the internet due to lack of accessible websites.

Sushil Adhikari, vice-president of Sangai Hami, said most of Nepali government websites are inaccessible. The screen reader software doesn't read out Nepali websites to guide the visually impaired to navigate different kinds of website tools.

"The activated screen reader does not read out Nepali websites, social networks, online news portals, videos, and blogs that are written in the Nepali font," said Adhikari.

NVDA, Serotek System Access, Apple Voice Over, ORCA, BRLTTY, Emacspeak, WebAnywhere, Spoken Web, ChromeVox, and ChromeVis are popular screen reader software that can be used by the visually-impaired to access websites, browsers, and blogs written in English.

Some of the websites of the government as well as other organisations have been developed both in English and Nepali versions.

The screen readers read out the English websites for the literate visually-impaired who are familiar with the English language. "I avoid the Nepali version as the screen readers can't guide me audibly. Thankfully, I am educated enough to understand English, so I navigate the English version," he said.

Visually impaired Radhika Lama, 46, of Boudha is unaware about such accessible websites. She has been relying on her friends and relatives to access internet. "As I cannot use the websites on my own, my friends help me post text messages, pictures and videos, among others on Facebook and Youtube," she said.

Aayush Shrestha, Chief of Design at nLocate, said there was no software that could read Nepali websites for the visually impaired. Nepali software developers are yet to come up with a screen reader that can read out Nepali fonts for the visually impaired.

A version of this article appears in print on August 25, 2015 of The Himalayan Times.

Aussie’s clean-tech design combats water scarcity in drought-stricken regions

autodesk cleantech seriesIn this special Cleantech Innovation Series sponsored by Autodesk you'll hear unique insights from a number of entrepreneurs, start-ups and innovative cleantech companies designing and building solutions for a more sustainable future. See more here.

It's been said that necessity is the mother of invention and the oncoming challenges of an expanding global population, climate change and water scarcity are certainly giving cleantech companies something to think about.

While financially viable renewable energy and energy storage options for households will see a massive uptake in coming years, one company is focusing on further improving the 'building blocks' of a home to elevate it's energy rating beyond the hallowed ten stars.

    nexus-300x167

Nexus eWater is an Australian start-up that's taken up the challenge of answering a specific question; how can householders use grey water more effectively?

They've developed an innovative solution that's emerged onto the American residential construction landscape and has piqued the interest of some of that country's biggest volume builders one of whom will be trialling it at a new development in drought-stricken California.

"Narrowing in on the US market made sense because the drought had passed here in Australia, there wasn't a huge demand for our technology, but some of the US states, like California, Nevada and Arizona, have profound water issues," says Nexus eWater COO Andrew Hermann.

"We're focused on grey water which is pretty much the waste from washing people and their clothes. The reason we see it as a good resource is that it's produced in vast quantities in every home every day and, as a water source, it's pretty much warm soapy water that doesn't need a lot of treatment before you're left with near-potable water for reuse."

"We've taken the approach that technology advancements mean we're actually at the point where there are no other opportunities to save water in the home, so there's a huge need for tech such as ours which harnesses waste water and reuses water and energy onsite."

    The product suite

SEACLIFF1-tomwood-neuman_t837-300x203Andrew explains that Nexus eWater have developed two parts to their current suite of products, the NexTreater and NexHeater. The market for both these products is new home builds; unless an existing older home has underfloor access and space in which to locate the systems, they can be difficult to retrofit.

"The NexTreater for family homes has a capacity of 200 gallons (260 L) per day and takes water from showers and laundry, removes soaps and contaminants using a patent-pending process. It's then sterilised and stored in a tank for reuse as toilet flushing water or outdoor irrigation."

"It really gaining a lot of interest in the US when we launched this product earlier this year, particularly in California because it's the first grey water system to be certified by US standards."

    rsz_screen_shot_2015-07-16_at_31028_pm-300x198

Garden pit for the NEXtreater system.

"We undertook really stringent tests, with a 6 month system testing phase without any maintenance or servicing to achieve some high performance parameters. So we were really pleased to have recently partnered with a US builder to have this product as standard in a new development of over 50 homes."

It was while developing the NexTreater that the Nexus eWater team discovered something about waste grey water that led to the development of the NexHeater; grey water is usually warm, having come from the shower or washing machine. They realised not only are households losing potentially reusable water, they are also losing precious heat down the drain.

"We really discovered this by accident!" says Andrew. "When we ran the numbers, we found that the embedded heat in grey water could be used through a heat pump process that extracts the heat from the waste water and then reheats clean water in a standalone system."

    Revolutionising grey water use

Nexus eWater's technology is revolutionary for a couple of reasons. Firstly, it's a pioneering grey water system based on a non-biological technology, so the antibacterial soaps and detergents used in the household don't affect the system process itself. Instead, Nexus eWater have developed an innovative sanitising process that uses the soaps and detergents to kickstart the grey water cleaning process, filtering and disinfecting it ready for the storage tank."The other great thing is that householders don't have to change their habits in order to use either the NexTreater or NexHeater," says Andrew. "They can continue to use their favourite brand of washing detergent, as much water as they always did and still cut their water usage."

    NEXtreater-Full-300x169

The NEXtreater as a standalone unit.

This, of course, is also appealing to volume builders who not only have to meet government-set energy efficiency targets, but also the 'green' demands of savvy clients who want to live sustainably but are unwilling to change their lifestyle habits.

"There has also been resistance from existing neighbourhoods in drought stricken areas to building new housing estates because of water restrictions," says Andrew. "Current residents are worried about water scarcity and don't want more people moving to the area and competing for that resource."

"So the main driver for builders is being able to say up to 40-45% of a new home's water is recycled is a big deal for them and the technology is paying for itself almost from day one."

    CAD software helps technology flow

Nexus eWater's technology was developed with Autodesk computer aided design (CAD) software, which helped them design products from the ground up, from small components right through to large scale metal work and frames.

Autodesk is a multinational company that provides 3D design software for a range of applications including for the engineering, architecture, manufacturing, media and entertainment industries.

Originating in the US, Autodesk launched the Australian arm of it's Cleantech Partner Program in 2013, which encourages cleantech innovators to solve the challenges of a growing global population by providing complimentary digital prototyping software to design and simulate pioneering ideas.

    Load-Analysis-300x279

AutoDesk helped Nexus eWater to model load analysis on the NEXservoir.

"We were lucky enough to be introduced to Autodesk through a few competitions they were sponsoring in the US," said Andrew. "We won the licences to use Autodesk Inventor Professional; for a cleantech start up company there's nothing more vital than having good CAD."

"Autodesk allowed us to design simple things like how off-shelf components would sit together to form a package right through to underground water storage tanks that we couldn't build ourselves; we undertook structural analysis and then sent the plans to a fabricator in the US to build."

"It was great to be able to do all the design in Australia and it made the manufacturing process very simple as the fabricator had all the information they needed and really didn't have to refer back to us."

Nexus eWater were also the launch partner of the Autodesk Cleantech Partner Program, providing an excellent lead example and paving the way for other new start-ups wanting to emulate this home-grown innovation.

    Taking on the world

As the uptake of Nexus eWater's products builds in the US, the company will start to turn their sights on Australia.

"The US is expansive and it's been great to find investment and the progressive builders – so we can use that experience to bring these products back to Australia with the expectation that we'll be in drought again. From this base, we'll then aim for the Asian markets."

The Nexus eWater team at the PCBC homebuilding trade show in San Fransisco.

The Nexus eWater team at the PCBC homebuilding trade show in San Fransisco.

"Interestingly, for a lot of the places we sell to, environmental concerns are least important, people really just want to save money on their utility bills – that's a motivating factor. The second motivating factor are water restrictions; Australians are more accustomed to it, but Americans find it oppressive to be told when they can and can't water their gardens."

"The shift we're starting to see now is people looking towards to carbon neutral homes," says Andrew. "Gas for water heating is not efficient from a greenhouse gas position and it doesn't matter how many solar panels you put on the roof, you have to offset that gas use. Our systems cuts that out completely and allows people to take that step towards carbon neutrality."

Andrew will be presenting a talk titled "The necessary future of water and energy conservation" at the Autodesk University in Sydney on 20th August. For more information please visit their website.

Mobile Flight Scheduling with RWD: More Data, Faster

August 17, 2015 -- Mobile Flight Scheduling with RWD: More Data, Faster

AircraftLogs took another major step forward with improved delivery of aircraft scheduling information to mobile flight crews on the road. The new release is part of extensive software enhancements being delivered this summer and fall utilizing Responsive Web Design.

"Because we've always been a pure, web-based SaaS solution, our technology was one step ahead of older web-enabled software. With Responsive Web Design - or RWD - we're now two steps ahead," said Bret Phillips, Director of Development for AircraftLogs. "Each year, we re-invest over 30% of our revenues in new software. Not everyone does that. RWD is one of those investments."

"Responsive Web Design is the technology term for web pages which adapt and resize to any screen size," explained Jonathan Denison, Service Line Leader for Advanced Operations at AircraftLogs. While older technologies can make a web page look microscopic on a smartphone, RWD eliminates the need to "pinch and zoom" when viewing our new web pages for the flight crew."

"We worked with one of our larger clients to create the initial design," explained Denison. "Our original goal was to streamline communications to the flight crew related to upcoming trips. When we did that with RWD, we realized we could deliver more trip information to a pilot faster than any other method...without requiring them to do a manual refresh!"

With one tap on a smartphone or tablet, pilots can see their schedule and specific trip details. From that view, they can tap to dial a passenger, an FBO or anyone involved with the trip. The new release is a huge step forward - eliminating phone calls, emails and other annoyances.

We'll release more RWD tools over the next year, but the pilots come first," added Phillips. "They are the most mobile people on the planet, and we need to keep up with them."

This release is part of AircraftLogs ongoing improvements to the Flight Operations Process Model. Customers or interested flight departments who'd like to learn more can request a Software Briefing or call Jonathan Denison directly at 614-360-9435.

    About AircraftLogs

AircraftLogs provides web-based aircraft scheduling software and aviation data management systems for corporate aircraft and government agencies. Based in Columbus, Ohio, its software is available on a SaaS basis (Software-as-a-Service). Additional details are available by calling 888-359-5647 or by visiting http://www.AircraftLogs.com. Artificial intelligence to design Myntra’s new fashion line

The author has posted comments on this articleSamidha Sharma, TNN | Aug 15, 2015, 01.17AM IST MUMBAI: After shuttering its website and becoming app-only, Myntra is now preparing to launch products like clothes and accessories which will be designed with the help of data science and artificial intelligence (AI). The Bangalore-based retailer has developed a smart bot that accumulates fashion-related information from across the online world, which is used as a base to design products. The initiative, started eight months back by a 30-member team, is focusing on crunching mammoth amounts of data in order to understand the consumer demand in real time, a Myntra spokesperson told TOI.

AI is the intelligence exhibited by machines or software. It is used by tech companies like Google as well as in fields like finance and medicine, among others, to create measurable impact.

"There is a big, emerging trend among internet companies which have accumulated tons of data to use it for personalization. Our platform is disrupting the current way of expert-based fashion forecasting as it is 100% tech-backed. We needed to show that it's a proven approach with the successful pre-pilot that we conducted," Ganesh Subramanian, head of new initiatives at Myntra, told TOI.

In the pilot stage, one of the in-house Myntra brands used this AI-driven platform to design its line which, Subramanian says, received a good response in terms of sales. "The bigger goal for us is to build an AI-based fashion platform which continuously produces insights and churns out customer-loving products in real time," he said.

Myntra will launch a separate brand around this platform next month and then open up the technology for others to use by next year. "We are using machines to learn fashion and its attributes with assistance from a few design specialists," Subramanian said. Myntra has established a network of partners and processes to crunch supply lead time from a year to only one month, he added.

Myntra, which morphed into an app-based retailer in May this year, has been looking to offer increased personalization to Indian shoppers. This has led to a lot of content being weaved around fashion trends unlike plain-vanilla listing of products reminiscent of the fi rst wave of e-commerce. Product discovery through content is starting to gain traction among consumers, leading to many e-commerce players across furniture and fashion pushing themselves as curators and not merely as sellers.

"Consumption is moving from plan and buy to on-demand across industries. Seeing the mobile revolution kicking in, the pace of change is faster than ever before. The customer today is a curator and creator. By using data science and artificial intelligence, we are able to give real time responses," Subramanian said. The success of this kind of technology would depend on other retailers and brands also adopting it and finding takers for the products.

Jet Airways - Designing for Enhanced Customer Experience

    BANGALORE, August 12, 2015 /PRNewswire/ --

Jet Airways Collaborates With ThoughtWorks to Provide Users With an Engaging Digital Customer Experience

Jet Airways upgraded its digital presence with an interactive and responsive website aimed at smart-device wielding travellers. Jet Airways partnered with ThoughtWorks, a global experience design and software development company, to bring the vision of providing a delightful customer experience to life. ThoughtWorks designed a website that not only reflects Jet Airways' brand of over 20 years but is poised to scale up with the latter's envisioned growth.

Jet Airways and ThoughtWorks decided to take a 'mobile first' approach, leveraging the responsive web design strategy that provides a seamless and consistent experience across desktops, tablets and smartphones. In a recent report by IAMAI and KPMG, the Internet user base in India is likely to reach 503 million and out of this more than 50 per cent of the users are mobile-only. Jet Airways is catering to this growing mobile user base with the new digital avatar.

The key guiding principles of the new Jet Airways website are minimalist design and intuitive navigation, accentuated by the simplicity of an upgraded booking engine. The new design leverages smart content to speak with customers while also providing deeper integration with social media.

Additionally, the website is compliant with Arabic and supports sixty one country specific sites including eight different languages. The site also provides for easy accessibility for differently abled travellers.

On the digital design refresh of Jet Airways, Gaurang Shetty, Senior Vice President, Commercial at Jet Airways, had this to say, "Jet Airways has always been at the forefront of adopting evolving technology to enhance guest experience across touch points. Extensive research was conducted and feedback gathered from frequent flyers, bloggers and travel writers to ensure we are in step with consumer preferences and expectations."

"The new website symbolises our continued commitment to our customer focused 'Guest First' service philosophy, which has been highlighted by the mobile first approach coupled with a personalized and seamless user experience across multiple devices," added Shetty.

Commenting on the expectations of Jet Airways' new design, Kate Linton, Creative Director at ThoughtWorks, said, "Jet Airways is a well-established brand, both in India and globally. Our challenge was to design a progressive and responsive customer experience, whilst promoting Jet Airways' brand philosophy. Through continuous collaboration with Jet Airways, we designed a product that enables a consistent, end-to-end and high quality experience for customers."

Homeless in Vancouver: Why the SourceForge website is dead to me

Today (August 9) I clicked on a link to the once-great SourceForge website and my Pale Moon browser kicked up an alert declaring that the Mozilla add-on uBlock Origin has prevented the page from loading because it contained blacklisted code, namely:

    ||sourceforge.net^$other

The link I clicked on was contained in a post from the University of South Wales security and privacy blog (which I have followed for years), about using Ophcrack, yet another Windows XP password cracker. Ophcrack is a free open source program hosted on the SourceForge website.

Turns out that uBlock Origin isn't blocking code so much as blocking the SourceForge website itself—something it's been doing since at least June 24! And I guess I can't blame it; I haven't gone near the website for months.

Free download sites certainly feel free to deceive you

Back in March 2015, SourceForge was caught stealthily distributing a malware browser hijacker called Blinkiland, which was designed to be almost impossible for ordinary Windows users to remove.

Blinkiland was hidden in downloads of the Windows version of the popular and respected open source FTP management program called Filezilla (which I've used for years).

While attentive users at least have the opportunity to opt out of the crapware piggybacked on downloads of Adobe Flash Player and Oracle's Java, there was no warning that Fillazilla came bundled with Blinkiland and once it was installed in Windows, Blinkiland could not be uninstalled without going into the Windows registry!

And you couldn't exactly blame the makers of Filezilla; it was SourceForge that was doing the bundling at the installer level—just like CNET's Download-dot-com installer (which uBlock also intercepts and which CNET users have a choice to avoid).

There was a bit of an uproar and Blinkiland was removed from the SourceForge installer in late March.

But, as HowToGeeks explained in June, deceptively bundling crapware with legitimate software has become the SourceForge business model, at least since Dice Holdings bought the website in 2012.

The broken promise of SourceForge (not to mention Web 2.0)

SourceForge was created back in 1999 by Slashdot to be a banner-ad-funded website repository for free open source software (FOSS)—this was in the days when proponents of "Web 2.0" said that such large commercial sites would be to the greater good of the free Internet (how did we ever believe that?).

To be fair, it seemed to work for many years. SourceForge grew and grew to become a hugely trusted "store front" of free open source software, reliably hosting hundreds of thousands of quality FOSS projects. It was where you went, both to window shop for FOSS versions of tools that you needed and to get the freshest builds of the FOSS ware that you already used.

Then in 2012 Dice Holdings bought SourceForge and moved the website from a business model of banner ads to bundleware.

In 2013 SourceForge offered FOSS projects the chance to use a new download method called "DevShare" in which makers of crapware would pay SourceForge/Dice Holdings to piggyback their shit on downloads of legitimate FOSS software, like Filezilla and GIMP; in turn, Dice would cut the FOSS developers a piece of the profits.

Two years later, I'm not even sure if developers can opt-out of using DevShare to distribute their software via SourceForge.

Github is now meant to be the preferred central repository of free open source software (FOSS) but name recognition and sheer momentum keeps SourceForge going; that and the fact that GitHub seems to be designed more to be understood and used by software developers than users.

According to the web-ranking company Alexa, GitHit is now the second most popular open-source website behind Wikipedia but SourceForge is still number four, behind Mozilla, the makers of Firefox.

But people should understand that behind its famous and respected name, SourceForge has fallen to become just another deceptive free download site at the deliberate expense of its users; so infected with greed that it will knowingly distribute malware in order to make a buck.

Themler launches world’s first visual web design environment for WordPress, Joomla and Drupal

After 3 years of development, Artisteer Ltd has today launched its new software product, Themler, for creating responsive web designs for content management systems, including WordPress, Joomla, Ebay's Magento, Drupal and PrestaShop.

The product also supports template design for e-commerce plug-ins like wooCommerce and VirtueMart that work with WordPress and Joomla.

Themler stands out among many customizable WordPress themes by being the only design product supporting a variety of content management systems, as well as allowing developers to produce themes and templates they can own and sell to third parties.

At the same time Themler is simple enough to be installed by any WordPress, Joomla and Magento users, and used to customize their website while previewing the design changes with their live content.

With these unique capabilities, Themler is the world's first integrated visual web design environment for content management systems.

What further sets Themler apart in the marketplace is its extensive library of 200,000 modern stock photos and graphics, which Themler users can use in their themes and templates.

Themler can be installed on a Windows desktop, or used in a web browser with any environment where WordPress, Joomla or Magento is installed. Desktop versions for Mac and Linux are also scheduled.

The product especially addresses the needs of web consultants who spend a considerable amount of time designing WordPress, Magento or Joomla based websites for their clients.

Many web consultants will find it especially thrilling to be able to cater to new markets they couldn't previously serve without having programming and technical knowledge of each CMS.

While for designers and website owners who do not use a CMS, Themler also supports creating static website templates and full HTML websites with multiple pages and content.

Themler comes with access to a library of 4,000 web templates for WordPress, Joomla, Magento, Drupal and other CMS and e-commerce systems.

It is currently available at www.themler.com at prices ranging from $49 to $199, depending on the desired features.

A video demonstration of Themler in use is available at https://vimeo.com/133549765
