Meet Windows 10, a Throwback With Upgrades in Software and Security

Windows 10, the next version of Microsoft's operating system, arrives on Wednesday, and it will have a familiar look and feel to the more than one billion people who have touched a Windows computer in the last two decades.

That is a stark change from the last time Microsoft made a big revision to its operating system, in 2012 with the release of Windows 8 — a release that didn't go so well. Many customers were confused by the flurry of changes that were designed for so-called hybrid devices that doubled as PCs and tablets. Microsoft's chief executive, Satya Nadella, said last year that the company "got a few places wrong in Windows 8."

With Windows 10, Microsoft is offering something of a throwback to the earlier versions. The software also comes with an enticing price tag for users of Windows 7 and 8: free. But perhaps more than anything, there are a handful of new features that might make users consider making the switch.

The Trusty Start ButtonPhoto Clicking on the Start button brings up groups of tiles that can be tailored to your preferences. Credit Microsoft

Back is the classic Start button, the one-touch access to a main menu, including shortcuts to a user's list of apps and documents. Like old times, it can be opened with the click of a mouse or by pressing the Windows shortcut on a keyboard. (The Start button was still available in Windows 8, but some users were confused because it was hidden from plain sight.)

Microsoft made efforts to modernize the Start menu with a fresh design. Clicking on the Start button brings up groups of tiles that can be tailored to your preferences. For example, I easily created a group of tiles labeled "Productivity" and pinned some of my most frequently used software for work, including apps for email, web browsing, Twitter, a calculator and Microsoft Wo rd. Removing unwanted apps from the group is easy — you just choose to "unpin" the tile.

For longtime Windows users, the more intimidating part to get used to will be tablet mode. With hybrid tablets, such as the Microsoft Surface, you can detach the keyboard from the screen and switch into a different software interface optimized for tablets. In tablet mode, apps consume the entire screen; the tiles of the Start section are enlarged to be easier to see and touch.

Fortunately, interacting with Windows 10 on a touch screen is generally the same as with most modern touch-enabled devices. Pinch outward to zoom in, swipe up to scroll down, swipe left to pan right. And even in tablet mode, the trusty Start menu remains there to remind yo u this is still Windows you're dealing with.

A Virtual AssistantPhoto For now, Microsoft's virtual assistant, Cortana,  will primarily live on computers and tablets. Credit Microsoft

A new addition right next to the Start button is Cortana, Microsoft's virtual assistant. A user can do a search by typing in a query or speaking a command into the microphone. Saying commands like "Remind me to buy milk on Tuesday" sets up a reminder notification that will alert you on that day, and "Schedule meeting tomorrow at 3 p.m." creates an appointment in your calendar.

On other questions, like finding a place to eat, Cortana often falls back to doing searches on Bing.com, Microsoft's search engine, which is less proficient than Google's search engine. In tests, Cortana generated mixed results. Asking Cortana to look up a place to eat nearby retrieved a list of Bing search results for the term "Find me place s to eat nearby," which included the website places-to-eat-near-me.com, as opposed to showing a list of restaurants. (By contrast, the same query on Siri, Apple's virtual assistant, brought up Yelp listings of popular restaurants within half a mile from me here in San Francisco.)

On the other hand, Cortana did respond adequately to some other commands, like "Show me showtimes for 'Trainwreck,'" which loaded a schedule of movie theaters showing the movie nearby.

A big hole in Cortana is the mobile phone experience. Cortana is built in to Windows phones and the problem is, you probably don't own one. To date, Microsoft's Windows Phone platform has 3.5 percent market share in the United States, according to Kantar Worldpanel.

Microsoft says that Cortana will eventually be available as an app on devices running Google's Android and Apple's iOS mobile software. For now, though, Cortana will primarily live on computers and tablets, limiting its usefulness.

It's difficult to imagine that while on the go, people will yank a Windows tablet or computer out of their bag to ask Cortana to schedule a calendar appointment or create a reminder. In addition, the idea of using a voice assistant on a stationary computer in a typical office environment, where colleagues will overhear you over their cubicle walls yapping to Cortana, seems off-putting. As a result, in its current state, Cortana is a promising start, but it's far less useful than its direct rivals, Siri and Google's Now, which are widely available on smartphones worldwide.

More Built-In SecurityPhoto The Windows Hello feature allows users to log in using fingerprint recognition. Credit Microsoft

Microsoft has made some bold promises about improvements to security in Windows 10. Chris Hallum, a senior product marketing manager for Microsoft, said in an interview that because of all the security enhancements in Windows 10, consumers and businesses won't have to install additional security software to protect their machines. "We include a full-fledged antivirus solution in Windows," he said.

Microsoft has been including these deeper security features since Windows 8. But with Windows XP and Windows 7, far more popular versions of the software, it was practically a requirement to buy and install third-party antivirus software from McAfee or Norton, unless you wanted to be eaten alive by hackers.

Mr. Hallum said Microsoft was taking a multifaceted approach to protecting user identities as well as blocking malicious software. For one, Microsoft Edge, the default browser in Windows 10, includes a feature called SmartScreen, which can identify malicious websites by scanning them for suspicious characteristics. The Edge browser also keeps some add-on software for the browser, like Adobe Flash, up-to-date to safeguard you from the latest vulnerabilities. Another feature, Windows Defender, can identify potentially harmful software you've downloaded and warn you before you run it.

Are you really safe not installing additional antivirus software? As we should all know by now, almost all computer systems have some vulnerability. Still, Charlie Miller, a security researcher, said Wind ows 10's security features should work as well as other antivirus software. He noted that Windows Defender had been a strong security program for some time.

The Upgrade ProcessPhoto Windows 7 and Windows 8 users will receive alerts when they are able to download the upgrade. Credit Microsoft

Beginning Wednesday, Microsoft will be releasing the operating system over the Internet in waves, starting with people who signed up to test early versions of the software as part of its "insiders" program. Later, Windows 7 and Windows 8 users who receive alerts notifying them of the upgrade will be able to download it.

At the time of my testing, ahead of the public release of Windows 10, I encountered a number of bugs. To name just two examples: In one incident, Microsoft's Edge browser blocked me for an entire night from using Google Mail, after mistakenly identifying it as a malicious website — though the next morning I was able to log in. I also had a frustrating time trying to compose a document inside Google Docs, when the Edge browser occasionally failed to detect when I was hitting the space bar; Microsoft confirmed it would fix the issue shortly after release.

Combine the early bugs with the spottiness of Cortana and the fact that third-party app developers are still updating their Windows apps for Windows 10, and the operating system still has a little ways to go before it becomes a solid all-around upgrade. But the improvements to security, along with the familiar user interface, should be reasons to grab this upgrade sooner than later (especially if you're on Windows 7 and lacking up-to-date security tools). The upgrade will be free for up to a year — after that, Microsoft may begin charging for it.

For to-be switchers, Microsoft offers a web tool where users can check if their apps are compatible with Windows 10 before making the switch. If you're eager to get in line for an upgrade, you can reserve a download on Microsoft's website.

Web SEO Master, a Division of SH Web Design & SH Web Commerce, Inc. Offers Enterprise Web Design Tips to Austin, Texas

Web SEO Master will be immediately offering Texas businesses their professional opinion for website design. Many businesses do not know where to begin when they decide on a new design for their website.

Austin, Texas (PRWEB) July 24, 2015

Web SEO Master helps businesses sell online and maximize profit and is becoming a leader in the Internet Marketing Industry as many of their clients have outstanding first page search engine rankings, which in turn, has significantly increased their return on investment (ROI).

    QUICK DESIGN TIPS

    1) Build Pages That Load Quickly

Pages need to load fast! How fast? Really, really fast. According to various studies, the average online shopper expects a page to load in two seconds or less, down from four seconds in 2006; and after three seconds, up to 40% will abandon the website.

    2) Use Short, Simple Copywriting

Sure, it's an ego boost to use industry jargon and be put up on a pedestal with all fancy talk, but when website visitors are evaluating a website in less than 5 seconds there's a need to keep your copy tight, simple and to the point. Use a Website Designer Firm (http://shwebdesign.com/) that uses a copywrite professional.

    3) Employ Contrast Through Colors, Fonts and Weights

Contrast is a great way to draw attention to the hierarchy of content presented on a page. The effective use of contrast tells visitors where their eyes should scan first.Contrast can be conveyed through colors, fonts and weights. It is very important to choose font colors that provide enough contrast that the reader can quickly scan the copy and easily read the message.

    4) Experiment With Fonts

To keep website design clean, focus on a limited selection of fonts or font families. Too many typefaces can ruin even the most-detailed project. Use variants within font families for variety.Different sizes, cases, weights and color can add variety and contrast without having to add additional fonts. As a general rule, most sites can be built using just two typeface families.

You can see the rest of their services and information on how to design a website by visiting their Website Designer Firm at (http://webseomaster.com/).

Dangerous duality in digital experience design

    Wednesday, July 22, 2015

A sparkling, voluptuous body, sitting on beautiful wheels with a deep, throaty growl emanating from the tailpipe. Open the door and sit down and lights and gauges tempt you to touch every last one of them. All you want to do is buckle up and let this gorgeous beast of a vehicle not only move your emotions but move your spine deeper into the back of the driver's seat.

Years of design and engineering coming together to deliver an amazing experience! Since Karl Benz patented the first automobile in 1886, car production has become a very highly evolved process involving multiple teams from thought to finish. As time passed, car design has gone from plain utilitarian to being in many cases the reason a car shopper will pick one vehicle over the other.

During this evolution, cars have become known more for the skin they wear than for the engineering that propels them and actually causes them to even exist as a real, modern system of conveyance.

Automobiles, like most modern inventions, began as engineering marvels and then got cloaked by a layer of design that as time went by defined how the engineering would work and fit into the new shapes designers would create. The two teams, though at times somewhat arch-enemies, transformed horseless carriages into mind-blowing, head-turning, modern marvels.

Almost 130 years later we have an established automotive sector powered by two distinctive core teams -- Design and Engineering.

    Two-horse set-up

This "two-horse" set-up of course is not unique to car production. It exists in almost every sector of human endeavour that entails making something. One such sector is that of website production. A broader and more appropriate term would be the creation of digital experiences (websites, mobile applications and virtual reality). The creation of digital experiences as we know it involves the application

    of two disciplines:

    Design/User Experience andDevelopment/Coding/

    Engineering.

The duality required in the production of our modern digital experiences has led many human resource departments to post job descriptions like the following seen on Monster.com:

    "Web Developer Job Responsibilities:

The role is responsible for designing, coding and modifying websites, from layout to function and according to a client's specifications. Strive to create visually appealing sites that feature user-friendly design and clear navigation."

Here's one from a local Jamaican company:

    "Responsibilities:

³³* Artistic ability to create top-tier web designs from initial concept

³³* Efficiency with managing multiple design projects while meeting deadlines

³³* Work closely with project managers and design/development team

    Skill requirements:

³³* Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite, experience/knowledge of Dreamweaver, CSS, HTML is a plus

    * A bachelor's degree in graphic/web design or equivalent "real-world" experience

    * 2+ years of web design experience

    * A great portfolio of past work is critical."

These job requirement posts make me cringe! The fine print is actually saying: "We want ONE person to do TWO jobs, but we are only going to pay you one salary."

Now, for small start-ups, some will say: "What do you expect? The funds are limited, payroll is tight, and the investors are only giving us so much money, so one person MUST deliver on both ends." While this may be somewhat understandable for a small start-up business, the sad thing is that this same mindset, like a cancerous contagion trickles up to larger companies and corporations. Institutions with the budget to support separate roles between design and engineering/coding refuse to do so.

    Serious misunderstanding

This shows that there is a serious misunderstanding of the interaction of design and development or design and engineering -- even though we all benefit from the harmonious separation of design and engineering powers as experienced in our daily commute to work through the modern marvels of automotive design and engineering. If we can appreciate this separation of duties within the automotive industry, why not extend the same courtesy to the web production or digital experience creation sector?

In order to get the most from a website coder/engineer let her code full-time. In order to get the most from a website designer, let him design full-time. I agree that there are people gifted to understand and operate in both worlds; however, mastery finds its true voice in relentless focus.

Yes, it is very important for a designer to understand the basic underpinnings of how his website design will be made or implemented. It is also crucial for a coder/engineer to have a strong appreciation for aesthetics, human factors, and how the decisions she makes will affect a user's experience while using the website, but for either area of a digital experience deliverable to be properly served, both designer and engineer need to be allowed to evolve to their highest possible level of expression within their unique discipline.

The degree of difficulty increases exponentially for a single hire to handle both the design and engineering areas at their very best. If we explore the current state of affairs we will realise that the necessity for someone that HAS to do both designing and coding/engineering is quickly fading.

Let's look at this from two fronts -- software versus human-driven solutions. The global availability of freelancers and talent that can be outsourced has drastically reduced the pressure to have a full-time designer or coder on staff. Either role, or even both can be acquired on an as-needed basis without putting a company's payroll in a vice grip.

On the software front, numerous solutions have been in development for quite some time now that allow a designer to do one of two things. For example: Designing from within Wordpress (a wildly popular Content Management System) using a highly customizable template OR designing a layout in Adobe Photoshop and then using software to generate clean, W3C compliant, HTML and CSS code. For smaller companies, solutions like Wix (an online web-based website site designer) are very good alternatives to design, develop and maintain a website.

    Unicorns

Now many of my coder colleagues will be up in arms as they read this article, arguing that some of these solutions do no create the best code or solutions for specific situations. Unfortunately, what many in the web and app development sector fail to realise is that web development and even design itself is rapidly becoming less of a service and more of a commodity. Our days are numbered.

When the commoditisation wave hits a sector the best thing to do is to specialise one's skill-set or talents and target under-served niches. The same applies to designers too. Rethink how you deliver your service to your clientele.

The competition is not only coming from "cheap" coders in India but also Fiverrr and other online services that offer way below-rate deliverables at costs many of our smaller companies are gobbling up at an exponential rate.

With shifting global, societal and market trends it is hard enough to keep up as a competent designer.

As far as it goes for coders, their skill-sets are also constantly shifting. Although there are foundational coding languages, new innovations in the field happen almost in real-time. Requiring one person to have these "powers" is no less than requiring this super-designer/coder to complete the 10 labours of Hercules almost on a daily basis. In

the web development industry these individuals

    are sometimes called "Designer/Developer Unicorns".

Having one hire switching hats may seem like the fiscally responsible thing to do, but too many technology options and design techniques are available today -- which one multiskilled hire may not be able to keep up with in order to ensure that your web product remains at a world-class level. Even if you find a Designer/Developer Unicorn, the stress levels you will put them through will create an unsustainable staff turnover rate.

In comparison to the automobile industry, the field of digital experience creation is still very young. Websites as we now know them did not exist 20 years ago. There was no such thing as an app store. Virtual reality existed only on Star Trek, and the only car that could drive itself was KITT from Knight Rider.

Let's take a leaf, no, a couple chapters from the auto industry. If we want to have the best possible digital experiences whether for a website, a mobile app or virtual reality, for design and engineering let us have specialised teams (for larger companies) or two specific roles for our smaller start-ups. Design separate from engineering/coding. This approach is guaranteed to produce the best possible deliverables especially given the tighter and tighter deadlines we now love to work with. It allows either stream of production to more rapidly improve along its own path because of the ability to focus.

I agree it will be a while before everyone agrees with this modus operandi, but time will prove that the best digital experiences come from companies that have wisely put in place...a separation of powers.

Xara releases Designer Pro X11 for programming-free content creation

Aiming to achieve faster performance with no program switching, lower memory and computing requirements, Xara has released Xara Designer Pro X11.

The WYSIWYG design tool offers vector illustration, photo editing, page layout and website design for £219.99 (inc VAT) with upgrades from £65 (inc VAT). It runs on Windows Vista 7 / 8 / 8.1 / 10, requiring a minimum 500MB of RAM and 300MB of hard disk space.

The latest release features new vector-based Art Brushes, offering real time painting of complex vector or bitmap brush designs along an editable freehand vector path. A range of realistic textured brushes is included.

In addition there are vector shape processing plug-ins to manipulate vector shapes and lines (with a third party API to be published later). The Transparency Tool introduces five new W3C standard, web-safe and PDF-safe blend modes. New plug-ins include a Spiral SmartShape tool.

For Web design, there's a new one-click placement to stick objects to any given place in the browser window while the content scrolls under. This is very useful for 'sticky' social icons or a permanent navigation bar across the top of the screen.

Website designs with no obvious page boundary can be created in Xara Designer Pro, by stretching rectangle backgrounds and photos to fill the browser width.

HTML5 animation features allow objects to animate (in a variety of styles) on mouse-over, click and even when an object first comes into view.

Xara Designer Pro X11 can publish to any web hosting provider (which now includes FTP and SFPT options).  Xara also provides 2GBytes of free web-hosting space, which also enables password protection for web pages.

It also has the ability to sync files via Dropbox and Google Drive (OneDrive coming soon). So if a user has the same file open on multiple computers (or shared with other users), saved edits will be automatically updated on the other computers with that file open.

There are new and improved text features including advanced hyphenation controls, to give higher quality text layout; new auto-correct options for faster text creation; text background colour controls and document-wide font search & replace.

The new text wrap options for inline graphics and automatic scaling of inline graphics make it easy to do major site-wide column width changes which is useful for multi-column work or mobile-friendly responsive website design.

Xara is developing a new, ultra-high performance (60fps scroll and zoom) online editor. Included in Xara Designer Pro X11 is a beta release that is limited to text and photo replacement.

The company said it provides an easy way to view, edit and update the content of Xara documents and websites using a web browser on any computer or tablet, with an accurate WYSIWYG editing interface with a hi-fidelity page representation, including accurate fonts and page layout.

Mobirise: A free, simple, drag and drop mobile responsive Web site builder

I just discovered a free tool called Mobirise for building mobile and responsive Web sites that is, I think, quite excellent and definitely worth checking out.

Despite an endless procession of tools over the last few years, creating a web site with any sophistication has remained difficult unless you're willing to go for a very generic look. Even using a template, getting your content looking like you want it to look and behaving how you want it to behave can be very tough, particularly if you're going to effectively support mobile access (the number of sites that still look terrible on mobile browsers is amazing) and now, thanks to Google, being mobile-compatible is de rigueur if you want to score with SEO.

Mobirise is an OS X, Windows, and Android application that's one of the few easy-to-use applications providing a "mobile first", Retina ready, drag and drop development model. Built on Bootstrap 3, one of the most popular responsive HTML, CSS, and JavaScript frameworks available, the application's user interface lets you select various types of "blocks", place them on pages, and then customize them.

Mobirise's blocks, which can have colored, image, or YouTube video backgrounds with color overlays and selectable opacity (static backgrounds can also be set to be parallax) include full page "headers", menus, media, multi-column content, information, social links, pricing tables, and footers. You can add one or more blocks to a page and create multiple pages.

    screen shot 2015 07 18 at 3.09.24 pm

You can also customize which typefaces and colors are used, add and edit buttons, and, where you have text content, select how many columns of text are visible. Controls at the top of the Mobirise screen let you preview the design in desktop, tablet, and smartphone resolutions.

Once you're satisfied with your creation you can preview it in your local browser then, when ready, you can save your site to your local drive, FTP it to your own host, Amazon S3, Google Drive, or Github. Check out the video:

While Mobirise isn't as richly featured as, for example, EverWeb, it has two advantages: First, it's more accessible for people who are new to building Web content (that said, sites built with Mobirise can be easily tweaked and new features added if you know what you're doing), and, second, Mobirise is free (EverWeb is $79.95 without hosting).

So, should Web designers be afraid that this app is a nail in their commercial coffin? Not at all. Sure, like EverWeb, it makes building a Web site easier, but it doesn't address the entire process so expertise in the other thousand and one things that make a Web site work is still required so Web designers will still be needed. The other, and arguably more important, reason why it won't displace professional designers is that a great Web design is something that only serious, highly skilled designers do.

Think of it this way; everyone can light a fire, chop some vegetables, and make a soup but if you're after a perfect consommé, you need some serious culinary skills. Mobirise will allow anyone with reasonable design skills to create a good or even a very good site but not a great one.

Oddly, Mobirise has a GitHub site which makes me wonder if they plan to open source the product but, as of writing, the only content they have on GitHub is a "read me" text file.

There's no detail currently available about who is behind Mobirise and, as of writing, I haven't heard back from the company. Given the number of blocks that are needed to fill out the functionality that's needed to build a complete site (forms, sliders(ugh), galleries, and so on) I wonder if the plan is to keep the application free and  charge for more advanced blocks.

It will be interesting to see how quickly the developers of Mobirise can add features to bring the application up to a level of functionality equal or greater than the likes of EverWeb.

Whatever Mobirise's plans might be, as it now stands, this is a cool tool and given that it's free, why not check it out? I'm giving Mobirise a Gearhead rating of 4.5 out of 5.

Get started with SVG for responsive web design

One of the nifty things about HTML5 is its integration with Scalable Vector Graphics, or SVG.

Like we mentioned in the free ebook Web UI Best Practices, SVGs are great for responsive design because you can create a scalable image that won't pixelate no matter the resolution of the browser. In this post, we'll take a look at how to use SVGs in your next responsive site.

See Sara Soueidan talk about SVG at Generate London 2015 – buy your ticket today!

    Introduction to SVG

With SVGs, you can draw graphics directly in the browser, because they scale up and down depending on the viewport. You do need some basic knowledge of HTML and CSS in order to use it, as well as some JavaScript if you want to manipulate SVG in the browser.

However, SVG shouldn't be confused with the <canvas> element, which allows you to draw graphics on the fly using JavaScript.

SVG is widely supported by browsers. It's resolution independent, making it ideal for responsive design. It uses a DOM node-based API and if you're not familiar with JavaScript, then there are libraries out there which can help you.

With all that in mind, let's get started. You simply have to create a normal HTML5 page and drop the SVG code right on into it.

  •    <!DOCTYPE html>

  •     <svg xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" version="1.1" height="190">

  •       <polygon points="100,10 40,180 190,60 10,60 160,180"

  •      style="fill:lime;stroke:purple;stroke-width:5;fill-rule:evenodd;">

  •     </svg>

  • Lines 4-7 create a polgon with lime and purple colors which looks like this:

This on its own doesn't tell you much, other than you can create a polygon using different colors by plotting the coordinates to create each point.

    Creating your own SVG page

Let's have a look at how you can create your own SVG page containing just a red circle with the title 'HTML5 Exercise 1', based on the book Jump Start HTML5.

As you can see, the code has created a red, filled circle which will scale up and down with the browser or device. The code for the SVG itself looks like this:

  • <svg id="circle" height="200" xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg">

  •       <circle id="redcircle" cx="100" cy="100" r="100" fill="red" />

  •     </svg>

  • So you've identified the shape in the code and the size of the circle. In the polygon example, the shape has ten points and these are plotted like this:

  •     <polygon points="100,10 40,180 190,60 10,60 160,180">

  • The same applies to the circle here:

  •     <circle id="redcircle" cx="100" cy="100" r="100" fill="red" />

  • In this line, cx represents width, which represents the horizontal length in the coordinate system while cy represents height as the vertical length. Of course, the 'r' is the radius. You can also specify the viewbox attributes which are four values: min-x, min-y, width and height.

To make it smaller or larger, you alter the values. Because  it's a circle, it has to be the same or a part of the shape would be effectively chopped off. So to make the circle bigger, up the 100 values. To specify the fill color, you just add 'fill=red' (could be blue, green, or whatever hexadecimal color you like).

If you wanted to add a border to the circle, you would have to add a stroke color, as shown below.

  •     <circle id="redcircle" cx="100" cy="100" r="100" stroke="black" stroke-width="1" fill="red"/>

  • Save the document, as an XHTML document to ensure better browser compatibility as this adds an XML declaration into the first line.

You can create different shapes using SVG, including:

  • line
  • rect (rectangle)
  • circle
  • ellipse
  • polygon
  • You can also use:

  • path: Allows for the definition of arbitrary paths
  • polyline: Defines shapes built from multiple line definitions
  • Using SVG you can 'paint' shapes using gradients and patterns, thanks to the elements 'linearGradient' and 'gradientTransform'. These are defined by the stop element and in the markup, we'll use 'def' elements within the SVG tags.

So, taking the circle that we've just created, let's see how we would add a gradient to it.

  •      <!DOCTYPE html>

  •     <h1>HTML5 SVG Exercise 2</h1>
  •         <svg id="Gcircle" height="200" xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg">

  •             <defs><linearGradient id="MyGradient">

  •     <stop offset="10%" stop-color="yellow" />

  •     <stop offset="90%" stop-color="blue" />

  •       </linearGradient></defs>

  •           <circle id="Gcircle" cx="100" cy="100" r="100" fill="url(#MyGradient)" />

  •     </svg>

  • As you can see, we've first named our circle type and defined its size before going on the add 'defs'. These  tell the browser that we'll be using a custom gradient color, with the fill defined by the color and stop values. We've told it we want a linear gradient in yellow and blue.

You can also use the SVG element to create patterns using the patterns element and its attributes. Like the above code you can then fill or stroke these patterns as well as set coordinates and use defs.

There's a lot more to how you can use SVG and for inspiration of how else you can use SVG, check out these examples of SVG that will make your jaw drop.

    Other tips for creating SVGs

You can use SVG in place of image sprites along with media queries to create pages that are lightweight.

So far, we've looked at using inline SVG. But you can create SVGs with  normal graphics software. such as Illustrator, and place them into your designs using CSS and place them inside a container. To hide or show elements when the window is resized, add media queries to the SVG in a <style> tag.

In Illustrator, create an SVG using the 'save as' menu, generate the code for an inline SVG.

This will open up a text document containing the SVG code, which you can then drop into a web page or call as an object. You can convert a simple pixel-based image to a vector using Illustrator, then save it as an SVG for web or use the code to create the image on a site in the browser.

SVG is fairly simple to get started with and if you're a designer who already creates vector images, then there's a lot you can do with it.

All it takes is learning a little code and for this, we would recommend that you go through the resources on W3C, which also has a facility for you to practise code and see it working in real time.

    Further resources

If you're not a subscriber to Adobe Creative Cloud, then there are plenty of other tools that you can use to create SVGs.

  • SVG Edit: A web-based tool based on JavaScript for drawing directly in the browser.
  • Inkscape: Open source graphics software similar to Illustrator.
  • Snap: Create interactive SVGs and animations directly in the app, or import from popular graphics software such as Illustrator or Inkscape.
  • HTML5 Rocks: large repository of resources on all things HTML5.
  • It's not 100% necessary for UX designers to know code, nor to learn it.

However,  a basic understanding of HTML and CSS can make all the difference both to your designs and how you communicate with other members of the team. HTML5 contains some exciting new elements, like SVG integration, that can can help you to create faster, more responsive sites that use the devices that they're on to create a great UI and awesome UX.

Terry and Clarence Low, Bits ‘N’ Bytes: Steps to take if website is hacked

Q What should I do if my website is hacked?

A Widespread hacking of websites is an unfortunate reality today. The hack may be obvious — your page is defaced, visitors are redirected elsewhere, you notice strange traffic in your web logs (especially from overseas) — and so on. But it can also be fairly unnoticeable, and indeed a recent survey shows that nearly two-thirds of website owners who were victims of hacks didn't even know it happened.

The first step is to not panic and call in technical reinforcements such as your hosting provider or website developer. Gather as much information as you can for them including CMS login information, passwords, user names, web logs, any custom software codes that may have been installed (often a culprit as many don't contain adequate security features) as well as any backups you have that can aid in data recovery.

Next, temporarily take your site offline by accessing your hosting control panel and password-protect the main directory — this will block any visitors from getting onto your site while it's being fixed. Then, initiate a comprehensive scan of your local computers for viruses and malware using up-to-date software such as one of the Norton products and, if you're communicating with your host or web designer, insist they do the same for the server your site works through.

Lastly, change each and every one of your passwords, back up the site once again, ensure your software extensions are running on the most current updates and remain in close touch with your IT professional. Too often, experts note, a site is repeatedly hacked by the same individual because the proper fixes weren't put in place and the site was properly cleaned after the first attack.

Q Can you tell me some of the pros and cons of digital wallets?

A It's no secret that a cashless society is likely in our immediate feature, another hallmark of our evolving technological capabilities designed to make life easier and more convenient. However, streamlining our society with tools like Coin, Google Wallet, Apple's Passbook and Venmo, while beneficial in so many ways, isn't without pitfalls.

Utilizing a digital financial system eliminates the need for people to carry cash and even credit cards, and if your digital wallet — which lives on your smartphone, for instance — does fall into the wrong hands, it's easy to shut it down quickly, unlike the process of cancelling credit cards when your purse or physical wallet is stolen. And, of course, there's the sheer convenience of going digital: you can pay for purchases with the tap or wave of your phone or other handheld device or even loan and borrow money without having to go to a brick-and-mortar bank.

But then there's the downside. The technology is still new and experts are already noting that security features to protect from hacking haven't yet been perfected or simply aren't functioning completely just yet. Also, some digital wallets work on a biometric ID system such as fingerprints, and those systems are proving to be far from perfect — imagine not being able to access your accounts when you need to. And, of course, there are practical concerns that haven't been addressed: what do you do if your phone dies and you can't pay for anything? What are the steps to take if your digital wallet does get hacked? And once you've given out biometric information such as a fingerprint or a digitized scan of your real signature, how do you "get it back" if you choose to return to a cash- and credit card-based existence?

Although the advent of a cashless society is certainly exciting, it's still too early to tell just how safe it is, and that's why many industry insiders recommend waiting until verifiable statistics show the technology to be a little more reliable and secure.
