UX design in action – how should enterprises face user experience shortcomings?

SUMMARY: My last enterprise UX pieces focused on design methods. This time around, we focus on UX design in action, with views and project stories from UX consultant and practitioner Jose Coronado.

dream-big-take-actionJose Coronado has been focused on user experience long before vendors starting flaunting the "UX" mantra on the keynote stage. During our char, Coronado gave me his views on why UX has become a enterprise priority. He also provided a look at UX in action, sharing project outcomes.

Why has Enterprise UX become a crucial project criteria?

UX has moved from an afterthought to a central enterprise project criteria, with a direct impact on user adoption, and thus the success of the project. It's also becoming a more important factor in enterprise software evaluation and selection. Coronado points to three reasons why UX has risen in importance. The first? The impact of mobile apps, e.g. the "consumerization" of the enterprise:

For most of the last 20 years, enterprise software has had a captive audience. You didn't have to do much for users, who were expected to use the system… Now the expectation of the end users are different, because access to consumer applications is so readily available for them. They are beginning to implicitly become more educated as to what is easy to use.

They don't have to ask questions. They just install the app, they start using it, and they figure it out as they go, – in contrast with how traditional enterprise software has been built, which is very complex. Processes are very complex. We made an effort to support the process in the enterprise, but we never made an effort to really make it a transparent user experience, to put the burden of the processes in the system, and then just support the way people work.

The ingrained expectations of the user are one factor in the UX emergence, but Coronado points to the pressure of social media as another:

A decade or so ago, Facebook didn't exist. Twitter didn't exist, LinkedIn didn't exist. Now, when a company puts out a sub-par product, everybody knows, and everybody knows a lot quicker than when a company delivers a great product. Instead, they just put it out on the market. Executives pay attention to the impact of the products that they put in the marketplace, and that has created another big wave of UX influence.

The third factor is perhaps the most interesting, which is the shift away from a tech-centric "count the error messages" approach to design, to an approach where every design ties back to seizing a business opportunity, and a chance to engage the user:

Twenty years ago, practitioners like me had to fight to let us design a page. They wanted to test how many errors a person makes, versus the position we have today in which we say, "Let us determine how our design can maximize the value of these new product ideas in the marketplace." That's business-level language, a strategy-level conversation. The value proposition perspective is no longer centered in what we do. It's centered on the value that we can add to the process. That's critical in terms of why companies are paying attention to user experience today.

Are UX projects one-offs, or is there a coherent UX methodology?

Coronado's approaches UX from an industrial design background. For the last two decades, he's been focused on software interface design. In the last five years, the plot thickened with the surge of mobile, cloud, social, and the new enterprise solutions these trends have spawned. Through his company ITX Digital, Coronado provides UX consulting to enterprise vendors and end customers.

jose-coronadoFine – but I wanted to know if Coronado's consulting gigs were one-offs, or if he has developed a repeatable methodology around UX? The short answer is: yes, he helps companies develop their UX design strategy. But how does that play out in the real world, where UX resources can be scarce? Coronado's goal is to help companies take a close look at their UX skills issues, and develop a plan for optimizing their existing resources, adding new UX experts, or both:

It's both the organizational consulting aspects, as well as a product design aspect. I'm working right now on user experience strategy for the Accenture software division, which is part of the technology arm of Accenture. Basically, I have a methodology and a process that I can employ to bring the product or strategy people and the technology people together, and in a very compressed amount of time, which could be anywhere from a week to do a concept, to a month to do a full minimum viable product, to validate the design solution in the market.

Better UX for a better result – a project example

For a detailed example of how better user experience can impact a company at scale, Coronado shared the story of a UX project at ADP. At the time, Coronado was an ADP employee, tasked with developing ADP's Global User Experience Program. The roots of the story go back to 2010, when ADP was getting plastered on social media for their site design. But as Coronado tells it, the competitive pressures also elevated UX to a corporate priority:

In 2010, we were getting tweets such as, "The 1990s called and they want their website back." It's 2010, for God's sake, and people were basically comparing our products to the beginning of the web. That was very helpful in terms of catching the attention of the executives and the decision-makers of the organization to pay attention to user experience.

On the other hand, prospects would say to us, "We know you guys have the best technology platform, best of league, and the broadest platform for employee services solutions, but your technology looks dated." Our salespeople would tell us, "We don't want to show the product because when we show it next to our competitors, and we look really bad."

Empowered by executive buy-in, Coronado's team got to work. A core team of three: a tech lead, a marketing lead, and UX lead (Coronado), designed a program of four components:

  • Push the envelope of modernizing and personalizing the user experience
  • Re-usability: create portable UX technology that can be used around multiple products and product suites
  • Create a foundational development library and UI toolkit that teams around the global organization could use to build new products.
  • Improve/streamline the design process via visual analysis in the form of a visual simulation platform, with the goal of democratizing design capabilities.
  • And: pull all four off with limited internal design resources. To accomplish this, the scope of user experience was expanded to include teams working on UI, as well as developers, business analysts, and project managers. Another key element for the fourth bullet: a third party design visualization platform from iRise.

Coronado discovered iRise as he looked for resources that would help his team move rapidly from requirements to interactive prototypes. Getting prototypes up and running quickly is no easy task, but Coronado believes speed-to-prototype is crucial for incorporating design feedback. Coroado believes that iRise shortened that process to days instead of months: "iRise works by producing a visual simulation of the software you are attempting to create, so that end users and stakeholders can provide direct feedback on an application and expedite the review process."

But like any other project, UX must justify itself. Coronado reports that the first product suite rollout with the new UX resulted in a 300 percent conversion rate:

That 300 percent increase speaks volumes to the business impact of user experience. By leveraging the visualization platform, we were able to renew multi-million dollar partnerships with large financial institutions – that was just another contribution that had very clear business impact. We put a flag up on the wall that said, "$35 million. That's my return on investment. Any questions?"

Tripling your sales conversions is a hard result to argue with, but I wanted to know specifically what Coronado attributed that to:

There were a lot of factors. Let me give you one. Before we launched the integrated product suite, a client would have to go to four different websites and enter four different credentials. Every product looked different. The new product suite was a single platform requiring a single credential. After we took the product suite live, there was only one place that you needed to go to determine at a glance what you needed from the product today. Now, the salespeople were excited to show the product. The prospects and were saying, "This is game-changing for industry."

All told, the global adoption of the UX initiative took two years to complete, but the first suite was launched within the first year. By the end of the second year, Coronado's team was able to measure the market impact.

    Final thoughts

It's still unusual to hear about UX overhauls where specific business results can be cited. I'll be looking to share more stories of this kind down the road. Coronado had more to say on the do's and don't of UX projects, and how to balance internal team resources with external experts. I'll return to those topics in a future installment.

Disclosure: Diginomica has no financial ties to ITX Digital. This interview was arranged by the PR firm representing iRise, which contacted me about Coronado's UX expertise. I thought it would make a good installment in my UX design series, and an interview was arranged.

Fabricate this: ShopFloor software heralds a new era of mass customised furniture

Offering a window into the future of mass-produced furniture and architectural solutions, ShopFloor, a new web‐based software platform that allows buyers to customise their purchases, is taking off in the US.

Created by engineering and fabrication firm A. Zahner Company and launched last year, ShopFloor is a design-to-fabrication tool that makes use of generative algorithms and 3D software to facilitate streamlined production of customised furniture designs. 'We found a big void [on] the furniture scale between serially mass produced objects and one-off bespoke art pieces,' says platform design engineer Andrew Manto. 'ShopFloor spans this gap by enabling designers to directly create custom built objects.'

Perhaps one of the most appealing features of the app is its ability to calculate costs in real-time using current metal prices together with Zahner's manufacturing costs, so potential buyers are able to design pieces to their own specifications while staying wi thin budget. Once the design is complete, the app automatically generates production-ready drawings for the brand's Kansas City, Missouri factory where it is manufactured, packaged, and shipped across the world.

Thus far, ShopFloor's offering includes three apps: 'CloudWall' for vertically louvered fin walls; 'ImageWall' for patterned perforated metal; and, as of last week, 'Aluminum Bench', a snaking aluminium seating solution for public spaces that marks the brand's move into furniture.

Launched on Monday at Chicago's NeoCon design expo, the bench is the work of Los Angeles-based Jonathan Olivares Design Research, who worked in close collaboration with the engineers and designers at ShopFloor.

'The creation of any physical object is always an interesting challenge, but designing under a premise which allows high degrees of customisation contains an added degree of difficulty,' says Manto of the complex design process, which involved developing a computer algorit hm that takes into account the curvature of the bench and distributes legs accordingly, in a way that makes it both stable and aesthetically pleasing. The team of five also calculated the minimum radius to which the aluminum extrusion used along the edge of benches could be rolled before breaking – 'the resulting dimension formed the basis for the manner in which any given bench can twist and turn,' he tells us. Made using 100 per cent aluminium parts, and available in black or white with a UV and scratch-resistant powder coating, the benches' curvature, length and colour can all be customised, manufactured and shipped within six - eight weeks.

As for the future? 'We are developing a set of facade generators that enable the novel use of Zahner's beautiful and robust metal cladding systems,' says Manto. 'And we are also establishing a framework that will allow outside designers and architects to propose and develop their own web-apps for ShopFloor. We see the ShopFloor pl atform as being only as strong as its content, so we want to make sure that we are representing the freshest and most interesting ideas we can find.'

RS Components introduces DesignSpark Mechanical Premium Add-On Modules for 3D Design Tool

Two New Optional Premium Modules Available for Intuitive 3D Design Software, Adding New Functionality to Make the Tool More Powerful to Support Engineers in the Rapid Development of Product Concepts

SINGAPORE--(Marketwired - Jun 22, 2015) - RS Components (RS), the trading brand of Electrocomponents plc (LSE: ECM), the global distributor for engineers, today announced the expansion of DesignSpark Mechanical with two new optional premium modules that significantly extend the functionality of the existing version of the tool.

Developed in conjunction with SpaceClaim, the leading provider of flexible and affordable 3D modelling software for engineers, DesignSpark Mechanical is an advanced 3D direct modelling tool that can be downloaded free of charge. Notwithstanding the availability of these optional premium paid-for modules, which can now be purchased from RS, very importantly the fundamental software that is available today will remain free to all users with continued support, new versions and updates from RS into the foreseeable future. DesignSpark Mechanical is a key element of the initiative by RS to provide tools for engineers that enable them to rapidly develop prototypes in the product concept design stage. For example, the software's STL-output format enables the direct export of designs to 3D printers.

The first premium module available is DesignSpark Mechanical Exchange, which adds advanced import/export capabilities and enables the import, modification and export of industry-standard STEP and IGES file formats, which allows full exchange of design data with CAD tools such as SolidWorks, Catia, ProEngineer and AutoCAD. The module can enable engineers to integrate DesignSpark Mechanical into a product development toolchain that works across various software platforms, moving beyond concept creation to a seamless workflow for producing final designs. It means that companies can pass designs to their mechanical department or outside contractors for final design creation and manufacturing and do not have to invest in highly expensive 3D CAD licences or training.

The second premium module -- DesignSpark Mechanical Drawing -- adds SpaceClaim's Associative Drawing environment, which allows the changing of designs, as well as the ability to create and modify geometry from within drawing views. It enables the creation of detailed dimensioned drawings allowing designers to move beyond concept development and the 3D printing of prototypes and on to final manufacturing. The drawing environment also provides a familiar workspace for those accustomed to working in 2D. In this environment, drawings support annotations, including geometric dimensioning and tolerances, notes and leaders, to JIS, ISO, and ANSI standards.

"The advanced capabilities of the essential and free version of DesignSpark Mechanical will meet the 3D design requirements of the large majority of users," said Glenn Jarrett, Global Head of Product Marketing at RS Components. "However, these two premium modules will further enhance the tool and offer more functionality to highly advanced users at a very competitive price, and enable them to create a seamless concept-to-production workflow."

These two new premium modules build on top of the latest version of free-to-download DesignSpark Mechanical. Version 2 of the software was released in December 2014 and added several features that had been requested by DesignSpark Mechanical users to enable an even better 3D design experience. These improvements include a simplified user interface and access to a new 3D catalogue allowing the rapid insertion of tens of thousands of 3D models from leading component manufacturers. Also integrated in version 2 were all the necessary RS purchasing data for fast Bill-of Materials (BOM) creation and also a QuickParts® 3D printing service, which is available via RS in conjunction with its partner 3D Systems.

The DesignSpark Mechanical Add-On modules are available for purchase on the RS site at www.rs-online.com: DesignSpark Mechanical Exchange is priced at $795 DesignSpark Mechanical Drawing is priced at $795 and the DesignSpark Mechanical Add-On Bundle, comprising both the Exchange and Drawing modules, is priced at $995.

DesignSpark Mechanical version 2 continues to be available for free download at www.designspark.com/mechanical. Support can be found via the DesignSpark community at www.designspark.com.

Nokia to Design Mobile Phones Again, Despite Earlier Denials

Nokia's CEO says the move will come in 2016 after a non-compete agreement with Microsoft expires, according to a report.

Nokia will again create and license mobile phone designs—but not manufacture the devices—starting sometime in 2016, some two years after selling its once-market-leading mobile phone line to Microsoft as it worked to shed shrinking operations. The move, which will offer the phone designs to third-party manufacturers for production and distribution, was revealed by Nokia CEO Rajeev Suri in an interview with German publication Manager Magazin, according to a June 18 report by Reuters. "We will look for suitable partners," Suri said in the interview. "Microsoft makes mobile phones. We would simply design them and then make the brand name available to license."Suri's comments come just two months after Nokia sharply denied news reports back in April that it was again contemplating getting back into the mobile phone market, according to an earlier eWEEK story. Those reports at the time cited a former Nokia executive who said that the company was working on such products and could intro duce them in the future. "Nokia notes recent news reports claiming the company communicated an intention to manufacture consumer handsets out of a R&D facility in China," the company said in an April 26 statement on its Website. "These reports are false, and include comments incorrectly attributed to a Nokia Networks executive. Nokia reiterates it currently has no plans to manufacture or sell consumer handsets." In hindsight, though, that denial points specifically to manufacturing and distributing phones, which Nokia would not be doing under its potential design and licensing moves with third parties that are being described by Suri. This is not the first time that Nokia has looked at designing devices but leaving their manufacturing and distribution up to someone else. In November 2014, Nokia announced its first-ever Android tablet computer, the N1, which is built under license by a third-party device manufacturer, according to an earlier eWEEK report. The N1is being manufactured, distributed and sold by Taiwan's Foxconn.Nokia sold its mobile handset business to Microsoft on Sept. 3, 2013, for $7.1 billion, but has continued to operate its telecommunications equipment and navigational software units under the Nokia brand. The Microsoft-Nokia deal was completed in April 2014.Nokia will not be eligible to make or sell smartphones again until sometime in 2016 under the terms of the sale due to a non-compete agreement that remains in effect until that time. Before the acquisition, Nokia was a Microsoft premier Windows Phone partner. Microsoft previously said it purchased Nokia to help the company narrow the gap between it and its rivals by offering affordable, entry-level mobile devices to customers. In October 2014, Microsoft announced that it was rebranding its Nokia nameplate as Microsoft Lumia, while moving away from the Nokia nameplate. In April, Nokia announced that it will buy Alcatel-Lucent in a $16.6 billion deal that is expected to create a significant player in a rapidly evolving networking market dealing with such fast-moving trends as mobile computing, the cloud, the Internet of things and software-defined networking. Talk about Nokia's possibly acquiring Alcatel-Lucent began at least two years ago, after Nokia bought out Siemens' half of the companies' joint venture and had agreed to sell its struggling handset business to Microsoft. The melding of the two vend ors is expected to create a company that in 2014 had a combined $27.5 billion in sales and $2.45 billion in profit, more than $5 billion in R&D and net cash of almost $7.9 billion. Nokia will see its addressable market increase by 50 percent, to more than $138 billion, officials said.

Darien Library Launches Video Site, Debuts Web Series

Darienlibrary.tv websiteConnecticut's Darien Library last week launched darienlibrary.tv, a new website designed to offer streamlined access to the library's archive of library-created video content, including recorded author lectures, educational seminars, TechCast "how to" series on consumer technology, reader recommendation presentations, and more. Much of this content was already available online, but on a "hodgepodge" of sites, explained Assistant Director for Innovation and UX John Blyberg.

"We have been producing video content for quite some time," Blyberg said, with some recordings predating Darien's new building, which opened in 2009. "We hadn't come up with a strategy that we were happy with. We had a lot of it on YouTube, some of it on Vimeo, some of it was just floating around on our internal file servers…. We needed a place to put all of this stuff."

Darienlibrary.tv content is hosted on the library's YouTube channel, with videos embedded in darienlibrary.tv's clean, intuitive interface. The most recent video posted to the site occupies the majority of screen real estate on the site's homepage. Navigation options are limited to a single drop down menu on the top left of the screen, allowing visitors to browse by series, and a search field in the top right corner, plus small type links to the main darienlibrary.org site in the bottom left corner, and to the site's Creative Commons license in the bottom right. The site employs responsive web design techniques, enabling it to scale to any screen size, making it easy to navigate on tablets and smartphones, as well as desktops and laptops. Blyberg has posted the templates—built on the open source Jekyll site generator—and other files needed to produce the site on GitHub so they can be easily adapted by other libraries.

Specific darienlibrary.tv content is not yet discoverable on darienlibrary.org, although the library has been promoting the new site via social media, and has included a prominent "now open" graphic and link to the new site on its homepage.

    Doing one thing well

When designing websites—particularly homepages—many libraries struggle to strike a balance between promoting digital resources, highlighting events and news, making it easy to search the library's catalog or find branch information, and making it possible to navigate to other library resources from the homepage. Tradeoffs must be made and priorities set, or sites can become cluttered.

Blyberg said that darienlibrary.tv is part of a broader effort to enhance the online experience for Darien's patrons, and that the stripped-down simplicity of the design was deliberate.

"This is the first step in that strategy, to create discrete experiences around the content that we are providing," he said. "We thought about making a subsection of our website—darienlibrary.org/videos, or something like that. But when we thought about it, and started piecing together this digital strategy that we are starting to embark on, we thought 'let's think about this in terms of designing experiences around the content, rather than the other way around.' When you go to darienlibrary.tv, it's clearly just a video site. There's nothing else there. We're not trying to push in any other library initiatives or information. We're just providing as-is."

    Data driven

Site analytics played a major role in shaping the design of Darien's new video site and its emerging digital strategy, Blyberg said.

"Over the past few years we have had, internally, one idea of what users wanted," Blyberg said. "But then, when you actually look at the analytics and see what users are going to and what they are viewing, it can be a bit of a bruise to your ego. You've put all of this work into what you think people want, but they actually don't want that."

Using this analytics data, Darien is examining ways to simplify navigation and ease of use for popular content.

"We're going to parse out all of the things that our users want from our online presence…and figure out how to streamline the experience of them getting to it," Blyberg said. "That means pulling out a lot of information that we always thought was useful or value-added, and paring it down into silos where we can tailor make an experience around the content itself."

    Documenting the library

Concurrent with the rollout of darienlibrary.tv, the library debuted its new online web series The Library. Professionally filmed and edited by retired advertising executive Manny Perez, who has been working as a videographer for Darien for about a year, each episode of the ongoing series highlights a different behind-the-scenes aspect of the Darien Library, such as a short film following a book as it travels through an automated materials handling system, or an episode in which Darien's Head of Readers' Services Stephanie Anderson, Book Group Coordinator Marianne Paterniti, and Reader Advisor Patricia Sheary prepare for a readers advisory event.

So far, Perez, has selected the topics and subjects profiled in the series, exploring each subject as a documentary filmmaker.

"He doesn't have a library background, he has an advertising background," Blyberg said. "So when he comes into the library, he doesn't see what we see as librarians. He looks at it as 'how does this happen? How does a group of three or four librarians…create a successful program?' We'll brainstorm and look at the schedule…but ultimately it's his curiosity that drives it." The goal of the series, Blyberg said, is "to create pieces that both advocate for the library, and educate the public as to what actually goes on in a library…. It's basically [Perez] delving into interesting parts of the library. One series may be him focusing on a particular program or event in detail, another may be exploring what a particular department does, and getting to know the people in those departments. The intent is, if you watch the series, you have a whole new appreciation for not only how Darien Library works, but how public libraries in the 21st century operate."

While most libraries may not have the resources to fund a full- or part-time videographer, Blyberg noted that video editing software and 1080p digital recording equipment has become relatively inexpensive. The site itself is hosted on GitHub Pages, and the only additional capital expenditures on the project have been for lighting equipment requested by Perez.

Targeting K-12 schools, Project Ignite encompasses the end-to-end design experience, from idea to digital modeling to physical fabrication. It brings together free* and custom design software, step-by-step projects and for-purchase hardware options. Autodesk's Project Ignite, Tinkercad and 123D Circuits web sites are COPPA safe-harbor certified by CARU Kid's Privacy Safe Harbor Program.

With Autodesk's long history in education, it understands first-hand how young learners have the potential to change the world when given the right tools and inspiration. The Project Ignite learning platform adds to Autodesk's comprehensive free* offerings in education by delivering a unique package of technology, learning content and services created specifically to bring the Maker Movement into the classroom.

"The ability to take risks, learn from failure and solve problems is critical to prepare students for the challenges ahead," said Samir Hanna, vice president and general manager, Autodesk Consumer and 3D Printing. "When learning includes making, designing and creativity, students have the freedom to explore different ways of engaging with content and each other. Project Ignite provides the collaborative and hands-on environment needed to energize educators, increase student engagement and inspire design thinking in a simple and fun way."

With support from companies including Microsoft, MakerBot, and Electroninks Writeables, the Project Ignite learning platform additionally offers classroom bundles, which include hardware such as 3D printers and electronics kits along with professional development and training services, to help educators get up and running quickly.

"Project Ignite has been a wonderful addition to the classroom and I love what it does for my students' excitement, engagement and overall interest with design and 3D printing technology," said Kim Coyle, educator, Middle School of Plainville in Plainville, CT. "Our goal is to inspire and prepare the students to be the next generation of innovators, so we're expanding Project Ignite into other grade levels and looking into creating a makerspace next year to provide an environment that nurtures the students' curiosity and creativity."

Autodesk aims to bring innovative technology on common platforms to offer a better end user experience. Just as Spark, Autodesk's open 3D printing platform, aims to accelerate innovation in 3D printing, Project Ignite extends this concept into education by empowering the next generation of innovators and will be available in English for educators and students in the U.S. and abroad.

  • For educators – Project Ignite brings together free* Autodesk design software, including Tinkercad and 123D Circuits, and offers step-by-step lessons within these apps to encourage design thinking and hands-on problem solving skills. It also provides for-purchase hardware options such as 3D printers from MakerBot and Circuit Scribe pens and modules from Electroninks Writeables. Educators can also login for free* to access Project Ignite content whether or not they wish to purchase hardware.
  • For schools – Administrators may choose from various package solutions comprised of free* software and for-purchase hardware options, educator training and support, all from a single place to introduce the Maker Movement into the classroom.
  • For educational partners – Project Ignite is open to educators, publishers, education technology and hardware providers looking for unique opportunities to help drive the next education revolution that will inspire students to further their STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math) education and provide educators access to emerging technology trends quickly.
  • For families or parents – Project Ignite is a great way to learn technology basics together in a moderated environment that extends to engaging and fun weekend projects.

10 Options for Hosting Your Startup Website

As a startup, you are most likely counting your pennies as you read this. Funds only go so far, so your startup website needs to be near the top of the list when you're prioritizing how to use available resources. Even though most local startups don't need a large website, it is the platform that establishes your brand and serves as a main access point for reaching customers.

Being in the startup world, you're always looking for more cost effective ways to run your business. I've listed some of the least expensive ways to host your startup website, taking into consideration cost, platform and business size:

    1. Hostwinds.

This VPS hosting service is one of the cheapest host providers you will be able to find. Serving U.S. and UK start-ups and small businesses, Hostwinds is known for their reliability, with a no-downtime guarantee to back that up, plus 24/7 technical support that quickly solves problems through live chat or phone.

Other benefits include unlimited bandwidth and disk space, nightly backups and options that include VPS, shared or dedicated hosting. Prices are as low as $4.50 per month for one domain or $5.50 for up to four domains. For $6.50 per month, you can have a dedicated IP address. In addition to this cheap hosting, you get free stuff like free website and file transfer, free set-up and free domain name. This is a great way for a start-up on a tight budget to get website hosting.

    2. Bluehost.

Use this webhosting service if you need a lot of features, such as unlimited domain hosting, GB file transfer, hosting space and email accounts, as well as free templates and domain name, all under one account (domain).

This is a go-to website hosting partner for quick access to live chat and phone support from technical wizards. It offers a helpful demo account, so you can learn how the control panel works in advance manage your website. There are multiple security tools, such as admin password protection, a secure FTP, daily server backups and shared and dedicated SSL certificates, to keep information safe.

The icing on this web hosting cake is that it offers free ecommerce and shopping cart applications for retail start-ups, as well as CMS software, WordPress and survey software. Of note is the fact that it is one of the very few companies that do not give you an uptime guarantee or a catchall email. Annual fees include a domain migration fee of $14.99, a domain name fee of $14.99, and shared annual hosting of $47.40-$179.40, with no set-up costs.

    3. FatCow.

This simple, straightforward, eco-friendly web hosting company uses wind power to run its operations and features a knowledgeable and friendly team. The web hosting does not limit how many domains, subdomains, add-on domains or parked domains you can host from one account. High-quality technical support comes from the "Moo Crew" by phone, live chat and email, or you can select from their knowledge library of video tutorials, articles, and FAQs if you want to take the DIY approach to technical issues.

FatCow is ideal for those who need strong email tools, including a catchall email account and ways to set up email aliases and auto-responders. Value-adds include credits toward Google AdWords, Facebook, advertising and Bing/Yahoo! Search marketing, as well as a free YellowPages.com listing.

Minimal downsides are evident but do include only shared hosting capability and shared SSL certificate, as well as no cPanel. The annual shared hosting fee is $49 plus $14.99 for domain migration, but no fee for domain name or set-up.

    4. A Small Orange.

This web hosting company offers many shared plans, including the Tiny plan for small startups, the Medium for the average size business and the Super for more complex websites. They also offer a VPS or dedicated hosting plan for even more room.

The website hosting company has numerous types of hosting services, unlimited email addresses and Web applications like blog apps, CMS software, forum or calendar functionality, tools for educational and retail websites, survey tools and wikis. The only downsides are a somewhat limited bandwidth and disk space across all plans, and no ability to create mobile websites. Costs for shared annual hosting range from $35 to $240 as well as $15 for domain migration and $14.55 for domain name.

    5. 1&1.

This website company is known for its security strength, focusing on serving companies that want to sell products online. Features include a webspace recovery tool, daily backups, shared and dedicated SSLs. They also offer SiteLock for an additional fee for regular malware scans or signs of suspicious activity.

With unlimited bandwidth and disk space, this website host provides scalable solutions that grow as your start-up expands. Numerous website hosting plans mean there is something for every type of start-up and budget. The company also offers additional marketing value for the money with credits for Google AdWords, Facebook, Bing and Yahoo! There is a free ecommerce and shopping care software, plus an email marketing tool for email blasts and newsletters.

Just note that they do not offer live chat for tech support but only are available through email, phone and social media. Prices range from $23.99 to $179.88 per year for webhosting and $0.99 for the first year of a domain name but no fees for domain migration or set-up.

    6. GreenGeeks.

Like many web hosting companies on this list, this one is committed to environmentally friendly webhosting, opting for renewable energy sources to power its operations.

It's good to go with a host provider that offers unlimited hosting right out the gate, so you can grow your website down the line with more domains and any number of subdomains, add-ons or parked domains. GreenGeeks offers many starter websites that come with email accounts and search directory listings. This is great for start-ups that don't have a website and want to quickly get online status without waiting to design a site.

The company also goes easy on the fees, with no costs for set-up, domain migration or domain name. The only costs are annual shared hosting fees of $47.92 to $95.40. The only downsides are the lack of 24/7 phone support, no email management through a control panel and the inability to host mobile websites.

Related: Putting a Face to Your Startup's Website

    7. Hostgator.

This website hosting company provides a significant level of confidence, thanks to all-access tech support through email, phone, social media and live chat. They also have numerous resources and a forum to get additional help.

While many companies give you a 30-day money-back guarantee, Hostgator gives you another 15 days on top of that to decide if you want to cancel your hosting service. To design your website, they give you thousands of templates and customizable tools, as well as access to an array of open-source applications for content management, e-commerce, wiki, and blogging. They offer unlimited email addresses and numerous email tools, as well as free site builder and control panel demos.

They only do weekly server backups, so if you are updating content daily, this may be an issue. They also do not offer cloud hosting. Some fees are involved, including $7.95 per year for domain migration and $12.95 for domain name, while annual shared hosting costs range from $66.72 to $143.52.

    8. InMotion Hosting.

Starting with 99.9% uptime guarantee, you can feel at ease knowing this website hosting company will be working for you around the clock. Other great features include WordPress web hosting, private domain registration, cPanel demonstrations and dedicated SSL certificates. However, there is a limit of 25 domains for its top plan, and no cloud or reseller hosting.

They do not charge fees for domain name, domain migration, or set-up. Annual costs for shared hosting range from $56.68 to $125.88. Teachers can get free web hosting as an educator, while students can get 50 percent discount off shared web hosting.

    9. iPage.

This website hosting company delivers many unlimited features and value-adds, plus it regularly puts its shared hosting services on sale, such as its current promotion of $1.99 per month or $23.88 per year. The only additional fee is $14.99 for the first year of a domain name, but set-up and domain migration are free.

You get unlimited domains, add-on domains, parked domains and subdomains. Value-adds include many types of advertising credits and a free listing on YellowPages.com. There is 24/7 tech support, shared and dedicated SSL certificates, a cPanel for easy management, and user-friendly website design tools. However, you cannot register private domains.

    10. Hostt.

While it may seem like free website hosting is impossible, Hostt proves it is anything but. Rather than just offering a stripped-down webhosting service for just the very basics, Hostt offers many extras. These include free WordPress and free Joomla hosting, as well as support for Ruby, Python, Apache, Lighttpd, Mongrel and Visual Studio.

There are an unlimited number of domains allowed, along with free transfer from an existing website and unlimited bandwidth. You also enjoy one-click installation, 24/7 technical support and full control over your server and website. About the only annual charge is $13.95 to register your existing domain with them. Special note: I used to be involved full time with this business, hence me putting them at the last.

With the pros and cons and range of prices and fees, features and services, this list illustrates that there is some type of website hosting solution for every type of start-up.
